Yes it can be done, but it could look pretty messy.

Right-click the document file and choose OPEN WITH then select a program like Works Word processor (preferred)Wordpad or Notepad. Downloading & installing Open Office would work, but it's a lot to go through to see one document.

The mess comes from Word's formatting that can't be displayed by other programs like Notepad.

It would be better for your friend if YOU converted the file into something they could view like RTF and sending that to them.

- Open the Word file, click File> Save As.
- At the bottom, select Files of Type and pick Rich Text Format from the drop menu.
- Click Save and resend it to your friend

They should be able to use Wordpad to open the file. The original formatting will be different but the important stuff will be there.

If you only want to read them you can take Word Viewer from Microsoft, but if you want to be able to change the document you should go for Open Office.

Yes, if you have saved your word document in its proper category such as "family, private, vacation, fiancial, humour etc then all you have to do is click START, then "My documents", scroll through to the one you want and double click it.

If you don't have a "My Documents" folder by right-clicking on your desktop, hitting New, then choosing Folder and naming it My Docs or whatever you want it to be. After that any document you write or save can simply be allocated to that folder you just created.

You probably already know this anyway.

OpenOffice.org ( http://www.openoffice.org/ ) or AbiWord ( http://www.abisource.com/ ) are good (free) alternatives.
