Depends on if you define marriage through religion or through a legal system. Organized religion predates legal systems other than authoritarian whims of kings, tribal chieftains, etc.

Mostly, I'd say that marriage is a religious construct. Prior to that "marriage" would be more an agreement between parties rather than something legally or religious-ly significant. So, religion, first.

Good inventions? Hard to say no after reading Weber.

Marriage was a business agreement between men back then,

Organized religion came later but unorganized religion was before marriage.

Marriage existed long before organized religion.

Marriage is good. Most of the time. Its a public declaration of comittment to each other.

Organized religion is bad.
