When someone posts a long answer do you also put a thumbs down without reading it? Or how about reading the first sentence and then a thumbs down?

There are basically two kinds of long answers ... the kind where the poster copies and pastes all their information from another source, and the kind where the poster puts alot of original thought into the question. I'm very often guilty of writing long answers to simple questions.

Usually, I'll thumbs-down anyone whose entire answer consists of copy and paste. I'd much rather them post a link and I'll have the opportunity to read it if I want to. But if someone takes the time to type out in-depth thoughts, I'll take the time to at least skim over it and get an idea of the main points... and reserve any judgement for quality alone, not on how well their opinions agree with mine.

I read the first 1-2 lines, and the last 2-3 lines. If the answer was offensive in any way, or way off the subject, I'll thumb it down.

No, I would never do that. I admit to being too lazy to read some long answers, but I would never give them a thumbs down because of my laziness! I only leave negative ratings on posts I feel are extremely wrong or disrespectful.

Recently I put a thumbs down and flagged an extra long question. It was a big tirade about how America is greater than any other countries. The guy just went on and on trying to justify his basic opinion. I don't like it when people think that just by being verbose, their opinion is somehow superior.

I only give a thumbs down to a wrong answer or bad advice, not just because I have a different philosophy or because the answer is long. Long questions I usually just skip (they're almost always from 13 year old girls and end with, "So, like, you know, what do you think, does he like me, or what...?").

I don't thumbs down them. I read a little bit and then usually skip the rest and check the other answers, unless it is really interesting.

I only give thumbs down for posts that are technically incorrect. You can't do that very often in the Religion & Spirituality section -- unless it is a matter of historical information.
