Because christianity is a scoundrels religion. It's main purpose is to generate wealth for the few that claim to be messengers and servants (i.e., pastors, clergymen, etc). How else is it that there are 100,000 member churches in innercity neighborhoods where even though the people can't afford to pay all their bills, the pastor can afford to keep his personal jet fueled and ready to go at a moment's notice? God doesn't need money, he created the universe from NOTHING, right?
Why can't he create a self-sustaining church that powers it's electrical equipment with NOTHING but FAITH! Why not let the people keep their cash for thier retirement or for the rent? We always tell people to save for retirement, even though Jesus says not to worry about it. Give all your stuff away, become a vagabond and he'll take care of you, but no christian will do this.
Why? Their delusion does not take them far enough to believe that Jesus will fulfill THAT particular promise, even though most of them will quote it in a heartbeat if someone they know is down on their luck. That's why they say the christ tax is for the sustainment of the church. They all readily acknowledge that christ will not take care of their church. He needs THEIR money to do that.

Back in the days of Moses and then in the early days of the Christian Church, the offering was SUPPOSED to be used first and foremost for spreading the word of God, and after that the money or donations of food were SUPPOSED to be used to feed and care for the poor, the widows, the disabled, etc. But ever since there has been a church that collected money in the name of God there have been those who used these things for their own selfish purposes (heck, according to the Bible Judas Iscariot was pinching money from the purse he carried as a disciple of Jesus). Now that Jesus has fulfilled the prophecy and has done away with all the old rules and traditions that the Jews had to practice, the commandment is to give to the church, but there is no set amount to give (only an exhortation to give from the heart and the reminder that God loves a cheerful giver, so we should not give grudgingly).

It is not a tax, a tax is taken from you.
10% is a tithe, a gift given without compulsion, not a tax.
How do you know that a Church Basketball team has nothing to do with God? All things have to do with God, associating with other Christians at a Basketball game or Softball Game is part of being a person. We are supposed to give without reservation, the Church is supposed to spend our money wisely.
Money will never save any soul and if your soul is really saved, giving to the Church will never feel like a tax.
Peace!

Most Christians have no idea what the tithe is all about. The tithe was not to pay bills. It was to support the community and every 3rd year the tithe was given to widows and orphans. They never read the bible that specifically outlines a tithe and the proper use of it. There is no mention of paying bills or supporting the pastors salary or building a new gym.
Are there any churches giving away the tithe every 3 years? I think not.

When God instituted the tithe was during the days of the Exodus. The Levites were the tribe that God set aside to be the priests and to take care of the tabernacle. They did not have an inheritance in the promised land like the other tribes. Their inheritance was the tithe which was brought to the tabernacle. The meat, fruit, money, grain, etc. gave them their livelihood.

It's not exactly like that. It's giving money to the church because the people who serve God don't have a lot of money and sometimes churches need work on them and the people who work for the church need to eat and in some places it helps pay for the minister's salary. It's all a part of giving of yourself, sacrificing for God.

Many Diocese in the USA are bankrupt or almost bankrupt due to the skyrocketing legal cost of all the pedophile priests lawsuits .
The innovative new approach to evangelism are also quite expensive. Ted Haggard for example has to finance meth and male hookers. The silicone bases lubricant costs an arm and a leg. So you must keep the money flowing...

we are to pay tithes because there is supposed to be money in the house of God. Not to mention, as Christians, we know that GOD is the source of everything. The entire 100% doesn't belong to us. So 10% is a small price to pay.

Pastors, Ministers, and other Protestant congregational leaders often pull salary from the donations. I personally know a paster who had a $60K year salary running a church that didn't have more than 10 families. He didn't even live in the same community.

A tithe is not a tax. It is a willing gift from the heart that one gives back to God. Since God gives us everything, it is our way of showing Him that we love Him and are appreciative of all He gives us. God doesn't demand we give Him anything. He wants us to give from our hearts, to be a cheerful giver. The items or money that are given to God are used to further His kingdom and take care of those who cannot take care of themselves.
No amount of money can save your soul and if someone is telling you that, it is wrong.
