If husband and wife are filing separately to decrease their taxes, can they mail both their returns in a single postage mail if both were to go to the same address?

Better to send in your returns seperately.

Yes you can put several returns in the same outer envelope but the extra weight might require extra postage. You don't want to get them returned to you after the due date because of insufficient postage. I would place each return within its own inside envelope so attachments or enclosures do not get intermixed. I always send mine in by certified mail so I have proof of sending and of delivery. Its about $2,40 extra but worth the peace of mind.

It is very unusual (but possible) for filing separately to be cost effective. Double check that you both used the right tables and the right amounts for things like standard deduction. They are different tables and amounts for 'single' vs 'married, filing separately'.

Also, if one of your itemizes deductions, the other can NOT take the standard (½) deduction.

they're 2 separate returns. They pass to 2 separate places. the money comes from 2 separate governments. they have not something in straight forward with one yet another. you will get 2 tests.

It is fine to send them together.
I am curious why you are filing separately. Married filing separately is the least advantageous filing status. If you are married and live together, neither of you can legally file as head of household.

No..Do not do that. Send each return in it's own envelope. Don't chance the very small amount that would save, with the huge amount of trouble it could cause you.

Yes you can, that's no problem. Just be sure that inside the envelope, it's obvious that they are two returns.
