Canned foods never hurt anybody! Yet I hear so many people saying to stay away from canned veggies, canned fruits, etc...

"stay away from anything in a can."

And if your going to try and tell me it has to do with preservatives, or metal or something - i'm not worried about getting cancer in 30 years, i'm worried about eating healthy NOW.

Everyone has me afraid to eat canned peas and canned creamed corn for lunch, or to snack on canned fruit cocktail. But I don't see what could be wrong with it.

If anybody can fill me in on the WHY that would be great!

The concern about canned foods is that they are typically cooked (some would say overcooked) in the can. As a result some of the nutrients are destroyed by the cooking process, plus the reheating will destroy additional nutrients.

The typical nutritional hierarchy is
1. Fresh
2. Frozen
3. Canned

If people see you eat a lot of canned foods, they're probably commenting about the nutritional content of canned foods. Of course, some people take it to the extreme thinking all canned good is bad and that you should only eat fresh.

I use canned foods all the time - chili, tuna, soups, broths, veggies and fruit cocktail. However, I also use a lot of local fresh ingredients too.

Canned veges were a staple for my familiy when I was growing up, so I'm quite familiar with canned green beans, peas, corn, and spinach! Still have a soft spot in my heart for canned green beans with bacon....but, canned foods generally have been processed with salt or sugar and other ingrediants. It's been believed that the cooking process deletes some of the nutritional value of the food itself, and then manufacturers put it back in by adding nutritive substances. Actually, for health, fresh is the best, frozen is next best, and canned is the last alternative.

You already know why you just don't like the answer. If you aren't worried about preservatives, then eat away. Add lots of frozen prepared meals to your diet too!

Canned foods are just a convenience not to be a diet staple.

take a look at the food label and that will clue you in. most canned things have an EXORBITANT amount of sodium in them. the daily recommended value of sodium a day is 2300mg. now a days it is possible to find low sodium canned products though. just be sure to read the nutritional label before you buy.
