Whatever are the technicalities a good restaurant shouldn't make the customers to pay for drinking water. If it does is because it doesn't care about his customers but only about their money and it should be avoided. And then what would happen if a customer is choking to death for having swallowed a bit of food that got stuck in his throat? I mean, the waiter would give him a glass of water to clear his throat and then present him the bill? I think it would be utterly ridiculous. The stuff of a comic film! - By the way in the old days restaurants didn't charge for tap water in fact in some restaurant a jug of water was automatically put on the table. So why should they now?

Restaraunts are suppose to supply a glass of water after you have been seated. How ever in states suffering from draught , water isn't served until requested by the patron. If you are a paying customer, you can't be refused a glass of water and certainly should not be charged for it.

most restaurants sell bottled water as they become very popular additions 2 meals posh water with posh food at posh prices but do bear in mind that kitchens use a lot of water therefore the costs of tap water to the restaurant is a very high amount but in general if you request tap water with your meal the request will be fulfilled!!!

I live in the Northwest U.S. and all of our restaurants offer free water with your meal. I have never been to any restaurant in the U.S., Canada, or Nicaragua that didn't offer free water with the meal. Some restaurants to make you have to ask for it (because of water conservation), but I have never heard of a restaurant refusing to give you water.

by law a paying customer must be allowed free tap water, so yes if you were eating no if you wander in and ask for a glass of water and leave.
