My Sister in law left a statue of Mary "Our Lady" at my home, left the country. My question is; Why is there a snake on the base of the statue, at Mary's feet.

In some Scriptures in Genesis it says that "she" will crush Satan's head meaning the WOMAN and in other Scriptures it says her "SEED" shall crush his head. Either way they are talking of Mary and her son Jesus being the downfall of Satan. (Mary of course prefigures the Catholic Church but, it all still is pure Truth)

An interesting side note. I know of a very beautiful Chapel in Mossy Rock, Wa. dedicated to the Blessed Virgin and Jesus. Someone set a fire in the Chapel and everything burned but the snake under the statue's feet. Coincidence? I don't think so. The Evil One was totally behind it but, God always brings good out of evil and so the Chapel was rebuilt and is greater than before and now houses a wonderful thing. A replica of the Our Lady of Guadeloupe's picture (full size) that has been touched to the original Tilma of St. Juan Diego and has brought great graces and miracles to people.

Not only Catholics revere the Blessed Virgin Mother of Jesus.
So do many Anglican and Orthodox Christians.
You may be surprised to know that Muslims also have respect for Mary. If you read St Luke's Gospel you will hear Mary praying that wonderful thanksgiving prayer to God, "from henceforth, all generations will call me blessed".
As others have already answered, the snake represents evil.

In Genesis, the Lord says that He will 'put enmity' between the serpent and the Woman, and that he will strike at her heel, and will be crushed under her foot.

In that passage, the woman refers to Eve...but as Catholics, we look at Mary as the New Eve. Eve was the mother who brought death (sin) into the world....Mary is the New Eve who brought Life ( JESUS) into the world....crushing death through her cooperation with God.

It symbolizes the devil. In Genesis, it refers to the serpant striking at the woman's heel and the woman crushing its head. Mary will destroy the devil at the end times. Hope that helped.

In reference to her crushing the serpent that tempted Eve. She's considered the "new Eve". Perfection of womanhood, in obedience, that Eve was not allegedly.

the snake is a symbol of the devil. BECASUE she is standing on it, it means that she has triumphed over sin.
