Christians and Muslims believe that if one does not accept Christ or Prophet Mohammad as the one and only one savior one goes to hell where one burns eternally without respite. To save humans from the eternally burning hell they preach and convert others.
"Saving souls" is a part of faith.

I might think I know the true answer but I could be wrong.
I would say that they feel the need to convert others because it confirms that if others can be converted and accept their religion then they must have chosen the best reglion.
I think sharing Love, being friendly, helping another human being without condition is good - people can do this without being religious and without expecting anything in return.
There is only One -
Be Kind - Be Happy - Be Love

Well because converting others is part of the spiritual journey and a very important thing to do in any fair (as far as I know) although I am pretty sure that there are to many Christians at least that try to convert people instead of looking inwards and letting it come out. If you want to convert people you have to look into youself and meet with God first.

It is easier to focus on other peoples path, than to examine ones own demons. Some people strengthen their faith in their religion by pulling others down so they can look better on the outside...to the community and so forth.
What is difficult is when you stop pushing the wandering thoughts, so to speak, away and listen to the wisdom of our spirit. To stop fighting with ones self and heal is to heal all there is.

I think, it's because it helps strengthen their delusions and reinforces the believe in supernatural beings, by getting others to follow. It helps them 'prove' to themselves that what they chose to think must be correct, because so many others think so too. A very spurious argument to say the least. Let them as least recall that for most of mankind's active thinking existence we believed, in most part, the world to be flat. This doesn't, nor did it make it 'true'.

The Bible says 'He who wins souls is wise'.
Each man has to give an account to God.
