Your boss' son would be a Bar Mitzvah. If he's referring to the synagogue services that will be led by the new Bar Mitzvah, dress. If he's only talking about the after-party, it could go either way. Why don't you ask him? I'm sure he'd much rather you ask than risk your showing up innapropriately attired.

Dress, if it's at a reception hall.
Business Casual if it's at someone's house.
Just go, say congrats, have a drink, tell a joke or three, and then politely excuse yourself because you have to pick up a family member from the airport.
I think if you stay an hour, it would reflect well on you.

Um, which question are you really asking?
Your boss can't fire you for not attending a non-work-related religious event.
If you do go I think it's more dressy, but that's beside the point.

unlikely.
But- you might enjoy it.
It depends on the temple. If you're going to the service, a sportcoat and tie usually is fine. If you're also invited to a formal party- then perhaps a suit.
That's awfully nice of your boss to invite you.

Um... he can't fire you for not attending. Unless he wants you to become his boss. I like the lawsuit idea. Stay home, unless you really want to go.
