Come on driving is easy. Just remember that you control the car and not the opposite.

You probably have good drivng (mechanical skills) and up-to-date knowledge of rules & regulations. You just need to build your self-confidence.

Try driving when there is much less traffic on the busy roads that you need to take every day. Practice driving at mid-day or early Saturday and Sunday mornings when the traffic is greatly reduced. Go with a friend who can encourage you.

Be prepared - if your need to take unfamiliar roads, plan your route with a map so you know what to expect in terms of crossing traffic, merging lanes, the roads which come up before your final destination, etc.

Build up your self-confidence gradually, when there are not many distractions or concerns. Turn your radio very low, or off entirely, so you can concentrate on your driving.

Be a good defensive driver, and always assume that the other driver will forget to use turn signals, or make some other driving error. Anticipate what someone might do wrong and have your reaction already planned in advance.

Have an escape plan to deal with the driver who suddenly pulls out in front of you. Don't get your car 'boxed in' by cars in front, back and both sides - try to stagger your car from any cars in adjacent lanes. And don't drive next to a large truck, either. Drive with an extra safety cushion of space between you and the car in front of you - 2 or 3 seconds or 1 car length for each 10 mph - to give you reaction time to any emergency braking.

And drive with your low-beam head lights on during the day (or daytime running lights) - that way the other drivers can see you well in advance.

Drive carefully, responsibly and your confidence will increase to the point that you are as good, if not better than the rest of us.

It's OK to be scared.

There is far too much to be scared off, speed, bad drivers and all the stunts you might have seen on TV/Movies. However that shouldnt stop you from busy roads. Put a sign on your car that clearly tells the other driver that you are a Learner e.g. a red "L" sign, or better still drive with your Parking Lights on, that way most drivers will give you a headway, or atleast understand that you are learning. Watch your rear view mirrors every time you wish to change lane, or slow down. Communicate your intentions by giving turn indicators, or braking gently & releasing a few times before applying full brakes so that the drivers behind you register your intentions to brake. Above all use common sense, its' one of the most mundane tasks you will learn for a lifetime.

And Trust Yourself! Good Luck.

PS: Please make sure you have a permanent license to drive a four-wheeler passenger car, before you set out driving on busy roads.

Hi, I also had the same problem when I started driving. I would get really nervous when there were lots of cars around me. My best advice is to be a defensive driver. Meaning, keep a safe enough distance from the car in front you of. Also, when a car tailgates you (that would always make me nervous) just switch to the slower lane. The only way you can really get the hang of driving is to focus on the basics. Don't try to think too much. JUST drive safe and be in control of your car. Plus, don't worry or care if cars cut you off or try to speed past you. Just drive in your comfort zone and you'll be fine. I'm 19 and I feel comfortable driving now.

Hello
I understand what you mean. I hated to drive and the drivers ed teacher I had in highschool was a pain in the neck to put it nicely. Try to drive in an empty parking lot. Depending on how you feel have a parent or friend go out on the road with you early Sunday morning, even after church, not as many people. You may also have driving school in your area. Sign up it makes you feel better.

Hang in there

Also take a few deep breaths and don't panic.

What causes the fear? Once you fiqure that out maybe you can over come it.If it soley because of you feel you lack the needed driving skills then practice is the only way. GO some where were you feel safe and learn control. Control as in driving in your lane properly, speed control, turning parking etc. Then work your way into traffic. I used to drive over the road and the flow of traffic can change your mood quickly. It is not just about you having control of your car/truck it is watching for the idiots out there as well.

You should probably ease into it by starting on secluded roads and working your way up. You'll need to know how to drive on busy roads though so experience is the only thing that will help you be less scared. Don't worry everyone had to go through this. Good luck :D

drive in less busy roads until you can drive without being tense and without having to think about it too hard(a two lane 35-45 mph road). when you feel more comfortable try busier road(road w/ a turning lane). finally try the interstate when you get more comfortable with everything else.

hope this helps. once you get more confident with you driving skills you shouldn't be scared. just watch out for bad drivers! they are what you should watch out for.
