Christians are guided by both God's law and by man's law. Nearly every secular government forbids sexual relationships and marriage between close genetic relatives.
(Romans 13:1-2) Let every soul be in subjection to the superior authorities, for there is no authority except by God; the existing authorities stand placed in their relative positions by God. Therefore he who opposes the authority has taken a stand against the arrangement of God

At the time, humans had a perfect set of genes, without the presence of mutations. Even Adam and Eve were brother and sister, as they shared the same genes. Eve was a clone of Adam, minus the X Chromosome.
Without the presence of mutations in the genetic code, there was no concern for abnormal births. Since Adam chose a woman over God, humans did not remain in a state of perfection. As time passed, and their diets included things grown outside Eden, these mutations began creeping into the genetic code. This was when God knew it was time to limit reproduction between close relatives. Today, we know why because of our technology, but at the time, humans didn't know why, only that God ordered it. It is a part of several things in the Bible that God ordered that we are only now beginning to understand the science behind it, such as washing food, storing dairy and meat products separate, circumcision, and abstaining from blood.
Of interest, in recent years, the issue of incest has been coming up, as Gay are demanding equal rights. I've seen articles about a growing belief that with our current level of reproductive technology, incest between consenting adults should no longer be deemed illegal.

Christians aren't necessarily the smartest people out there. Incest is a problem because in most cases the underlying problem is sexual exploitation of another person, or a psychological abnormality in the family relationship that results in the affair. Children from homes where there is no love in them can often turn to incest as a means of having some kind of affection in their lives. There are instances of adult incest, but in most cases there is a more dominant person, often a male, who coerces the other into the relationship. If it were to be legalized, then for ever one happy couple you'd probably have fifty where someone is being abused.

Saying that we are all decendants of Adam and Eve is a common misconception. I
study in the manuscripts, however, if you just look in your Bible, the Book of Genesis, you will note that the races were all created in the flesh on the 6th day; Adam and Eve were "created" on the 8th day. There were already thousands of people living on the Earth when Adam and Eve came on the scene. They were living in the first town ever, called Nod. This is where Cain found his first wife when he was thrown out of the Garden.

If we believe the Adam & Eve story, (essential to Christian, Jew and Moslem alike), then we must accept that for the first 5 or 6 generations, there will have been close breeding; however form that point onward assuming only a doubling of population with each generation, there will have been a wider gene-pool, and less chance to call the incest card.

This is not hypocrisy because God allowed it at the time. when God gave Moses the law it was then that God prohibited incest. The population of the world was such that sexual reproduction within the family was no longer necessary in order to populate the earth. Because of original sin and the curse that was placed upon Eve, human reproduction was mandated by God. Because of original sin God could no longer created men out of the dust of the earth and women from the side of men. God had to start somewhere in order that his command for Adam and Eve to multiply upon the earth could be fulfilled, and reproduction within the family was the only way available according to the way that God had set things up. God does not violate his own decrees.

Well for one thing, there were no, as far as we know, prohibitions against it until much later. Also consider, Adam and Eve were genetically perfect. Due to degrading Gene pools it is now much more harmful to interbreed.

Adam and Eve's children reproduced before there was a command from God to refrain from this behavior. Once the commandment was given, it became a sin; before the commandment, it wasn't sinful. Does this make sense?

My friend, you have just lucked up on a hazy part of the Bible. You might also think of who Cain married when he went to the land of Nod????? There was only 3 humans left on earth, after Cain killed Able. So....Just WHO did he marry? Since there was only 3 people left on earth, two men and one woman, Cain would have had to marry an evolved species that were enough like humans to breed and have offsprint. Food for thought. Pops
