Yeah, I'm hick from South Alabama-I admit. We grind our own cornmeal (makes the best dressing you ever had), smoke our own sausage twice a year, and make blackberry, strawberry, grape jelly and fig preserves. What do you make yourself that is unique? Maybe I could learn how to do something new?

I make absolutely everything homemade, right down to my own cosmetics, shampoos, laundry detergent, toothpaste etc. In the kitchen, I make all types of homemade cheese with vegetarian rennet and fresh raw milk straight from my cow. I also make my own butter, breads, crackers, food bars, yogurt, etc. I also grind my own rice and quinoa and tapioca flours. Email me if you are interested in any of these things. With the convenience of packaged garbage, so few people can make homemade stuff any more. Good for you. I love my homemade jams. I am vegetarian, so no sausage, but I did used to make my own jerky and things like that.

Oh my God, I am so jealous! I love to make my own stocks and sauces, and I have canned in the past...spicy corn salsa, pickles, tomatoes. I also make my own herb vinegars - purple basil, rosemary, thyme.
But I have never tried jams or jellies - although I am dying to, and would kill to know how to make my own sausage! And I have honestly never known anyone to make their own cornmeal - I think that's pretty cool...how dare you call yourself a hick!
Have you ever considered setting up a website and selling your stuff? Or at least a book with the recipes? Just curious - either would be a great idea!
Homemade will always win out over store-bought!

I buy Italian sausage and bratwurst at Sam's Club. $13 for 3 dozen. I also get chorizo at WINCO for $2 a pound. I don't think I want a champagne and truffle sausage fried with cabbage and potatos or to have it simmering in my spaghetti sauce. Regular chorizo with eggs is more than good enough. Even if I were rich, I wouldn't waste a lot of money on food. In my opinion money should be spent on things we keep. Food is only something we "rent", if you know what I mean.

Sounds really interesting! I make my own tortillas, stocks, sauces, sausages, breads, and pastas, but I've never gotten the hang of jellies. My mom could do it though, but she passed away before I could learn from her.

Cool, someone else love cooking from scratch! (I'm from Iowa.)

good for you. I don't have the time, the energy or the patience to do anything like that- the closest thing i've ever gotten to homemade was making a homemade pizza a year ago.

Good for you!

I've made jams, and grown lettuce, tomatoes, carrots and green beans, made whole wheat bread, bread from sourdough starter, pizza dough, pesto, hummus, granola, peanut butter, dried fruit, tamales, sun tea and candles.

It's always fun to see what you can create from scratch.

You must have a lot of time on your hands. As for me, I buy the processed junk from the store.

I make my own tampons by wrapping cotton around part of a squished up hot dog/ hamburger bun. Saves LOADS of money!
