I LOVE Westies, but Westies can be stubborn and easily bored, so you have to convince her that the training is FUN and beneficial FOR HER. While you are in the TEACHING phase, lots of positive reward like giving toys and treats. Once you are SURE she KNOWS what you are commanding, you must enforce her obedience. You can't let her get away with ignoring or fudging on a command, because she will quickly believe that she is the boss of YOU. And a Westie may be small, but can very bossy.

well her being the breed that she is they respond more to patient training they are very stubborn so harsh training is going to be reciprocated with even more stubborness i personally believe in traning a pet on your own just for the fact it makes the bond even stronger between you and your pet. it will be time consuming but there are a good # of reference books available. as for the name i have a few suggestions June, Chloe , or even and off the wall name such as Praline, or even Prudence.

Congrat's on the new puppy! "Sushi" is a cute & different name. The best training tip I have is potty training. Buy a bell (I have two small brass bells bought @ Michael's craft store) and tie them on a string and hang them on the door you will take her out everytime to potty. When you think it's time she should go out, take her to the door, lift her paw & ring the bell saying, "let's go potty" & keep repeating & praise her when she goes outside. Keep this up continuously & soon she'll learn to go & ring the bell herself letting you know it's time. Good luck!

You can visit
http://www.clickertraining.com/
for training ideas - and of course the best thing is to take a class. Especially for little dogs, you want to find a trainer who uses positive methods, like a clicker, and reward-based training. Have fun with your new dog!

Call her Kirby. There are a million web pages about Westies on the internet. I took mine to obedience classes when she was a puppy. Just be firm (not mean) with her and she'll grow up to be friendly and obedient.

My mother had one as a little girl and she named it "Snowball." Not particularly "tough" but cute.
