P2P technology is NOT illegal. The transfer (uploading and downloading) of copyrighted files, however, is. The RIAA and MPAA will not usually arrest you, they will sue you or try to make you settle out of court.

It is legal and Ill tell you why. When you download from limewire you arnt downloading from them but thru them. You get the downloads from other users. It is legal for you to give a copy of your music or anything to anyone you want to. As long as you dont sell it. The music industry wants you to think its illegal. Just make sure your virus definitions are up to date. There are alot of viruses and malware on there.

Program itself is legal to use.
It is illegal to share COPYRIGHTED stuff though. And may subject you to civil suits from RIAA/MIAA as well as Federal prosecution.
Think of it as a tool. It can used for good or evil. You decide.
