my mom had a brain aneurysm about 13 yrs ago. it changed her personality. she is mostly negative... about 1 yr ago my parents divorced. my mom lives w/ me and my family. i can not handle the negative attitude or the feel sorry for herself situation or her extreme lack of patience. i have my own children and need to focus on them. i can not get her motivated to meet people her age. i find myself crying for feeling so irritated w/ her.. she is my mom.. i understand things have been rough. i am not sure how to turn her into a positive person.. i don't want the negativity to rub off on me or my girls.

Ah, my mother was the queen of negativity. She was widowed twice. Cancer. She just refused to get out and do anything. She raised me on social security and VA benefits. But her negativity made ME negative. I had a hard time getting away from that....but I did. And the only way to do that is to surround yourself with optimistic people. I don't mean people who run around saying "Everything's GREAT!" I mean people who look at the bright-er side, not the dark side or the "glass is half empty" side. That will suck the life out of anyone around her. I'm sorry your mother's is organic, not situational. She really needs to see a neurologist...not a psychiatrist. There maybe something they can do to treat her.

she does need help but you can not force some one to get help if they do not want it. You need to kick her out and make her get her own place I know that sounds cold but you will never be free of her negative feelings or thoughts of herself and every thing unless you do this, then maybe she will realize that she needs to get some help and maybe she will get it.
