I believe the Bard had the perfect answer for you. I've always liked it:
"This, above all, to thine own self be true........
For then it will follow as the nights the day
Thou canst not be false to any man."
(sort of like that!)
Doing the right thing, means to do what my own highest nature says is correct to do. If I am true to myself, I cannot be untrue to anyone.

Doing the right thing means making decisions that don't harm anyone else, but when possible, benefit me as well.

To do the right thing is what you feel in you heart is right. It does not necessarily mean what is right for everyone else. You know deep down what is right.

The right thing is what is consistent with my True Will. My True Will is to live an honorable, useful, joyful, compassionate life among those who share my basic principles, and to have careful but courteous relations with those who do not.
