I need something to enhance my photos with, nothing too fancy, just to remove blemishes and add brightes etc.
I have already used up the photoshop trial so has anyone got any suggestions?

The GIMP, it's just like Photoshop, but free. It's open source. There are layers, filters and everything else, just like Photoshop.

The Gimp is the best free photo-editing program. However you indicated you require a basic program. Try Serif. Their Photoplus is available for free download of earlier versions. You may be able to get it at free download sites (not file sharing) or magazine sites such as PCPro or PC Shopper or others of that ilk. Do a Google for Photoplus 5. If available try 6. Keep looking for the highest version before you have to pay.
