Yes, pitbulls have a bad reputation. But there is little reason for it. How a pitbull turns out is more reliant on nurture, not nature. If you treat a dog well, and take care of it, it is a loving, wonderful pet. It is just as easy to make a loving lab into a mean dog as it is a pitbull. People just train pitbulls to be mean more often because they are powerful dogs. But, they can be very very loving. While working at a animal shelter, I came across many loving pitbulls, some that were most happy if curled in your lap. Yes, many neighbors and such may have some prejutice against pits, but there really is nothing wrong with the breed. Many are good with children, and can actually be protective of children and owners, but are rarely outright aggresive unless raised to be so.

Anyone who says that all pits are bad is wrong. They make excellent pets. They are no more bad than a Lab or a Collie. It all matters how you raise them. Most pits are excellent pets. The only con is because of their poor reputation some cities have made them illegal. There really is no good reason for such, as they are excellent dogs. As a dog trainer, I have dealt with many wonderful pitbulls.

We had 2 and they were gentle, loyal, well behaved with other people, and very very loving. They actually would be afraid if I scolded them. That is the pro. The con is their bad reputation. I think there are lots of BAD dogs of all breeds, but the only time people make a big deal is if an incident involves a pitbull. It's the way each dog, no matter what kind, is treated and raised, which determines their behavior. But especially with pitbulls, you need to be sure to raise them right The only reason they would be the most dangerous kind of dog, is because they are the strongest type. Ours passed away last fall. She was the quietest sweetheart you would ever know. The neighborhood kids absolutely loved her, and their parents were very much at ease with their kids playing with her. We would definitely have another one, no questions asked.

Pitbull Pros And Cons

2016-11-07 01:28:02 · answer #3 · answered by ? 4 · 0 0

I have a pitbull and a yorkie.

CONS: They are banned in most counties.
They are trying to ban them forever.
When you have one, people think you're dumb or a drug dealer.

PROS: They are loving and very intellegent.
They appreciate everything you do for them.

Pitbulls are not for everyone. They require alot of training and socialization. If you dont have time for that, the breed isn't for you. They also require alot of exercise. A pitbull is not a good pet for a first time pet owner. You should really read up on pitbulls, and then decide if thats what you want. If you raise them right, they can be a great family dog.

If you get the right dog and practice proper ownership, the main con is the prejudice people tend to have about them, plus many insurance companies have issues with them (though not all, you'll have to do research on this). I personally feel that everything about them is a pro (again, given the right dog with the right owner).

If you're asking because you're considering one, research the breed (generally ignore news articles). A site that you can start at is pbrc.net -- I can recommend others if you'd like, just send me a message.

Note: They're neither unpredictable nor dangerous unless in the wrong hands, and they are not known to "suddenly turn on their owner". In fact, true human aggression is still relatively rare in this breed -- most attacks occur for other reasons. Also, they're supposed to be excellent with kids (better than most dogs), though as with any dog they should not be left alone and unsupervised with them (for the dogs and the child's sake, plus it's just common sense).

RE:
What's the pros and cons of pitbull ownership?

Pros: if you find a good breeder they are as good a dog as any other, affectionate, smart, fun

Cons: Need training and exercise, potential for interdog agression even if they come from a good breeder, potential to get an unstable dog, every other con that comes with every other breed (you have to clean up their poop, they might chew your stuff, vet bills, etc.)

Some places have laws against owning a pit within city limits, some places have restrictions (like dog must wear a muzzle in public) so make sure you know what your local laws are regarding pits. It can also sky rocket your home insurance (if you can even still get home insurance).

Another major down side is the stigma. Your neighbors won't like your dog, even if its a good dog, and some of them might complain to animal control if your dog so much as barks.

Its a big responsibility to try and improve the reputation of the breed, which is what all responsible owners try for. It means that your dog has to be not just "good for a pit" but extremely well trained for any dog. You will have to go to training classes regularly, and work with your dog daily to make sure it knows how to sit, lay down, stay, heel, come, leave it...

Pros? I really can't think of a good reason to own a Pit Bull. I put 3 through Police Dog training & all 3 failed to do their jobs due to natural instinct. The instinct of the Pit Bull and breeds like them where breed to fight, so the name Pit. The people who breed this breed to fight has also screwed up the genetics. They select dogs for only one prupose & that is to attack to kill. They do not work to better the breed, they work to make a killing machine. Pups from these dogs, if not suitable for the pit are sold and then people wonder why the Pit Bull has such a bad reputation. All the genetics are there when a pup is bought to be a family dog. These pup have a very strong predisposition to be fight &/'or kill.

Cons?. These dogs are dangerous to the average pet owner who has no idea what that pups back ground was. They weren't breed in a calm, quite, easy going, laid back kennel. Fed a healthy diet. Had proper health care.

The one Pit Bull Breeding set up I saw was individual dogs staked out with a dog house and water. They were kept on short (6') chains, aggitators running through the kennel cause pure caos several times a day. Or they'd run a dominate dog through the kennel. Constantly harrassed & agitated. When the mom is pregnant all this is happening to the pups too. The same adrenalin, anger, fear are all being transfered to the pups long before they are born. So their predisposition for this behavior was breed in to them. And people wonder why the rep.?

To buy a Pit Bull that was breed by a competent breeder costs a pretty penny. So back yard breeders are able to sell theirs a lot cheaper but the genetics are ignored or not even considered there for screwed up dogs with loads of mental issues, aggressions issues, structure problems, bad temperament & very unpredictable.

Pros- saves you lots of money in the long run and you get to stay in a nice suite every year or every other year in a terrific location. Sure you pay the maintenance fees every year you have a week, but it is much cheaper than forking out 2-3000 dollars for a week in Hawaii. You will also have a kitchen where you can cook light meals and save a few bucks. Cons- not a financial investment.

Hi, I understand that you are looking for some advice or resources to help fully train your dog or fix behavior problems. If a professional dog trainer is not an option at this time, or if you want to trt training your dog on your own (a great way to bond), I'd suggest you https://biturl.im/aU7oM

A friend recommened it to me a few years ago, and I was amazed how quickly it worked, which is why I recommend it to others. The dog training academy also has as an excellent home training course.
