Coughs are usually the last thing to go when you are sick. You can have a cough for months at a time and it won't harm you. It is possible that second hand smoke is causing it to last longer, can you ask them to smoke outside?

I wouldn't worry too awfully much, although, it is probably pretty frustrating.
A viral thing can go on and on and on, and like already mentioned, the cough is the last to go. It's tiring and aggravating! Surely your docs have already ruled out a bacterial infection.
A cause for concern, would be greenish, and or, icky smelling and looking sputum, fever, difficulty breathing, in which case, you'd probably feel pretty sick, and your doctors would be more concerned, possibly suggesting a lung x-ray and antibiotics, among other possible treatments.
There is a viral thing going around. A LOT of people are hacking their heads off right now, and producing sputum by the buckets full, after having had the acute phase of the illness weeks ago. Being around smokers probably isn't helping matters any. Hope you feel better soon!

What? Your brother has asthma but there are people smoking in your house? Either someone isn't thinking or someone is an utterly self-centered little piece.

You could have asthma yourself. Try seeing a different doctor, and this time don't stop asking question until you KNOW what's going on. It could be the cigarette smoke, or it could be pollen: A lot has been floating around for a while. You might even want to get tested for allergies.

Good luck.

Last year the same thing happened to me and I ended up with walking pneumonia. I have never been so sick in my life. It took forever for it to really go away and I got pleurisy (inflammation in the lining between the ribs). It was very painful. I would go back to the doctor and ask firmly for a chest x-ray. That way you can rule out pneumonia, TB and it can even show signs of asthma. Are you coughing up blood? Don't let it get that bad. Good luck!

Just from the sounds of your problem it sounds like allergies. I know most people don't think that allergies make you cough, but in fact they do. They can cause sinus drainage in the back of your throat that make you cough. Now, I only know this because my daughter had a cough, short of breath , and she had dry skin in spots on her face and chest. This is what her Dr. said was a sign of allergies and asthma. Just something to check into. Check with your Dr. and see if you could use an OTC allergy medicine...just my opinion, hope that helps!
