Oh you said people of faith when you meant christians.
The problem you have is that most of you have never read your bible cover to cover, nor have you ever studied judaism, which was the religion Jesus practiced. You have no idea what you're talking about and those who do will either ignore you or try to educate you.. if we ignore you, you continue to persist; if we educate you, you scream persecution.
Try educating yourself before you try to educate others, and then perhaps you'll learn something and be more successful in your endeavor.

Well there can be a variety of factors but I think one of the biggest is the message the church (true church) is preaching. The gospel is the Grace of God! It's about the New Covenant and about Jesus Christ yet many believers and ministers are preaching law. They are preaching that in order to be right with God and be loved by God one must keep His 10 commandments and the million other religious commandments man has added throughout the years. But the Gospel of the New Testament does NOT say that at all! The Bible says that the 10 commandments were given to show man that he could NOT be righteous no matter how hard he tried. It was given to show us our need for a Savior! So many people are being told a false gospel and they are rejecting it because there really is no hope in it - just condemnation, shame and exhausting religious rules. No! We need to return to the Gospel of Jesus Christ which is GRACE, GRACE, GRACE!!! GRACE is God's Redemptive Action Completely Executed!! It's God loves us and accepts us and has made a way for us to know Him NOW in THIS life! Jesus did NOT atone (cover) for our sins, He was the propitiation - in other words, He took them away and therefore because we believe in His work of the cross we ARE right with God both now and forevermore! We are free from the debt we owed Him and free from the law(s)! He is our life! He is our Master! He is our Lover! And He empowers us by His Spirit and Grace to do good works and live a righteous life before Him bringing glory to His name! That is the gospel and that is what the church needs to return to proclaiming!!

If by "people of faith" you mean "Christians" then...The main factor that pushed me out of the Christian church I was trying so hard to be a part of was their view of anything feminine as distasteful. They were not even sure about motherhood as they celebrated "Father's Day" but turned "Mother's Day" into "Christian Family Sunday" and talked about "God the Father" just like they did on "Father's Day". I supposed that for them, once a woman had given birth, she was to go back on the shelf, just like Mary who was only mentioned at Christmastime and, even then, only briefly. I know and know of many women who have had similar experience.
If you mean coming to know God whether or not a religious or spiritual system is involved then I would have to say the biggest block is idolatry; that is the practice of putting that which is not God in God's place in one's life. This could be a sports team, a person, drugs, money and even religious texts such as the Bible or Koran.
There is too much noise today for most people, too many blinking lights and beeping machines. It is increasingly difficult with the ever increasing amount of information being thrown at us to even focus in on the useful and disregard the distractions. It is even more difficult for us to find the quiet to listen for the Voice or even to listen to our own hearts.

Well, my sister and I are taking Evangelism Explosion, and before I took it, for me, it was always relating God to something they can understand easier and getting into that convo with them. Also keeping them in an open mind. Now that I am taking E.E. though it makes the process a lot easier. Hope this helps.

I believe the problems is many of us look @ the human for answers instead of the Lord directly. If you as a believer can put aside all the things humans do around you, it will be easier to stick to the path that leads to God.
People think they know how God works and how God is going to improve your life, and they make many mistakes giving false advise to the new converts. That is were many new believers put their faith in false hopes and when it does not work they blame it on God and leave.
First God, then the men.

God's Child hit the nail on the head. People's foolish pride, ego, and selfishness keeps them from receiving the gospel. This is because they do not want to give up control of their lives. They are basically saying they are right and God is wrong. In my opinion, I do not think that is a very wise decision. Peace be with you my friend.

I don't think there is a problem with people understanding and accepting God. The problem is that each individual thinks that they know the only "truth", and that everyone that disagrees with them doesn't understand God. If God wanted us to understand him/her in the exact same way, he/she would not have given us individual personalities.

As one of those people who has retained faith but moved away from organized religion I will be glad to answer. The present judgemental attitudes of a large number of present day Christian churches. That is what has pushed me away and what keeps me from having any interest in returning to the organized body of believers.

For me the biggest obstacle is that the miracle of god is bigger than the miracle of where does the universe come from, therfore god is no answer to my ultimate question where does the universe come from. besides this there are other obstacles

I have heaps of faith in all sorts of things, but I don't see how that's got anything to do with your perceived "problem." Maybe there's part of your answer right there - what makes you think that religion has the monopoly on faith?
