If you mean a psych ward of a hospital, criteria would be that you are a threat to yourself or others in terms of physical harm. It could be a voluntary or involuntary admission. An involuntary admission would happen if the person did something and law enforcement got involved.

the peron has to be crazy, that is having completely lost touch with reality. sometime it may not even be that extreme. the case may have to be that the person wants to commit suicide or sometying. and i am being serious, on greys anatomy, they put a woman in a mental ward, because she gave herself third degree burns because she didnt want to take a test for fear of failing it. something like that.

its really easy to get in, its the getting out part that is hard.

stay up for days
do not eat or drink
pace constantly or spend hours playing one video game, whatever u do, do not sleep.

if you think you need to be a patient there, you can sign yourself in. you can leave at any time because it's voluntary admission. you don't need a doctor's referral.
