If you mean a psych ward of a hospital, criteria would be that you are a threat to yourself or others in terms of physical harm. It could be a voluntary or involuntary admission. An involuntary admission would happen if the person did something and law enforcement got involved.

The general overview is said to be whether you are a threat to yourself and/or to others, you may admit yourself or be admitted by others {by exactly who varies from state to state}. Some are free to the user, others are not. That basically covers the mental and financial aspects of your question. If you were more specific I could give a more specific answer.

the peron has to be crazy, that is having completely lost touch with reality. sometime it may not even be that extreme. the case may have to be that the person wants to commit suicide or sometying. and i am being serious, on greys anatomy, they put a woman in a mental ward, because she gave herself third degree burns because she didnt want to take a test for fear of failing it. something like that.

if you think you need to be a patient there, you can sign yourself in. you can leave at any time because it's voluntary admission. you don't need a doctor's referral.
