Hi everyone,
I'm French and I'd like to know how to pronouce the word "Carnegie".
Is it [Carneguee] or more like [Carnedjee]?
Many thanks

It surprises me because you don't seem to all agree on that, so is it possible that the two pronunciations are good? I don't think so, but... Learning English can be sometimes easy, but learning to speak is much tougher!

Salut leftyrealtiger,
It varies: [kärnĕg'ē] or [kär'nəgē]

It is pronounced car na gee with the emphasis on the last syllable. The "e" in the middle takes a short sound like an "a".

I've heard it pronounced car-neh-gee and car-nee-gee. The G is always hard as in the French Guillaume

It is pronounced "Car ne gee" with the "ne" rhyming with French "c'est." Stress on the "ne." The g is hard, as in goose.

It may be a US/UK pronunciation thing
car-nay-gee.......US
car-knee-gee.....UK
Here in NZ we normally use the "knee" pronunciation.

My 2 cents

Most people have taken to pronouncing it "CAR-nuh-gee", however the original pronunciation is "Car-NAY-gee".
