Joseph appears in the records of the birth of Jesus, the circumcsion of Jesus, and when they travel to Jerusalem when Jesus was 12 years old. After that he is not mentioned again in the rest of the Bible. Nowhere does it tell what happened to him.
The most common belief is that Joseph died prior to Jesus beginning his public ministry. But the Bible does not actual tell us.

Tradition says that he died when Jesus was still a young man. Otherwise, Jesus would not have given His mother into the care of St. John when He was dying on the Cross.
St. Joseph is the patron saint of the dying, since he had a happy death surrounded by his foster Son Jesus and the Blessed Mother.

He was long dead by then. We know very little about the years of Jesus prior to His public ministry. The gospels are without notation of any childhood events beyond Christ's birth except one reference that is found in Luke. It is the very last time that Joseph, the adoptive father of Jesus, is ever mentioned. Tradition says that he was much older than The Blessed Virgin Mary, which was common in those days.

It is assumed that Joseph died before Jesus beganhis ministry. In those days, women married in their teens, while men waited until they were in their twenties and established in a trade. Joseph would have been over fifty when Jesus beganhis ministry, had he lived. In those days 50 was old.

Considering Jesus took the time to give Mary another son to care for her (John) the assuption is that Joseph was no longer living.
