There are several references connecting 420 and marijuana. Check the link to wikipedia.

Here is one idea (taken from http://parentingteens.about.com/cs/marijuana/a/420meaning.htm) :

<< According to Steven Hager, editor of High Times, the term 420 originated at San Rafael High School, in 1971, among a group of about a dozen pot-smoking wiseacres who called themselves the Waldos, who are now pushing 50. The term was shorthand for the time of day the group would meet, at the campus statue of Louis Pasteur, to smoke pot. Intent on developing their own discreet language, they made 420 code for a time to get high, and its use spread among members of an entire generation. While our teens feel that they know something we don't, you can let them in on the fact that it was your generation that came up with the numbers.

A quote from one of the Waldos in the High Times article states, "We did discover we could talk about getting high in front of our parents without them knowing by using the phrase 420." Fortunately, your teenagers will not have that same option. >>

No matter why it exists, the fact remains that it has become synonymous with the marijuana drug culture and parents should keep an eye open for this term in their children's language and writings.

4:20 is perpetuated in mystery as to its origins, Some say that the professor who was the first person to use LSD 25 took it for the first time at 4:20 and that he declared 4:20 to be the perfect time to get high. It is celebrated on college campuses and in college towns every year. Hallmark should make cards for it-they could make some cash.

I'm not sure how 420 came to be connected to pot use.

Some people say its april 20th, some people say it means 4:20 (o'clock)

It sounds to me like just another reason to smoke some weed. (As if I ever needed a reason...)

420 has become a universal term for a time to light up and enjoy. 20 April has therefore been adopted as the universal day to light up and enjoy. I have heard many reasons for 420 being this but I'm not sure what is the true root origin of it.

I've heard it's because of the penal codes used to enforce marijuana prohibition, for example, 4.20 is, in some states, or perhaps the federal codes, the section offenders are prosecuted with. Of course, it's also symbolic in the fact that people come together to support the destruction and reform of Babylonian or despotic laws. People come together to break the law as a form of annual protest and display of no concern for unConstitutional and oppressive laws, no insult implied.
