I had a black cat for 18 years, so we crossed paths quite a lot! My life is charmed tho - she was in it.

Of course, it's nothing but an old wives tale - it comes from the days when people were paranoid about old women living alone with their cats being witches. I suppose the old womens' cats must've been mostly black for the tale to have evolved like this!

Hell yes its an old wives tale. I have an all black cat, and he and I have crossed paths many times. I tend to think the things that most people find unlucky(example- black cats, 666, etc.) are lucky.

Yes it is. And it's responsible for the death of any a black cat.

Black cats were thought to be witches familiars, or witches incarnate back in the day of superstition and nonsense. When witches were burned at the stake, many of the cats were burned along with them.

Unfortunatly, the nonsense still exists to this day. If you own a black cat, make sure you keep it inside - especially on Halloween.

I always thought it was lucky to have a black cat cross your path!!! Anyway we have had a black cat for over 10 years and we frequently cross paths and nothing untoward has happened yet. Well unless you count the times I havent noticed her and tripped over her but then I occassionally get my own back and accidentally tread on her tail when she gets in the way!!!!

I LOVE black cats, but have yet to be "adopted" by one (I have allowed my cats to choose me.) In old pagan myths, the black cat was actually considered GOOD luck. It boils down to this: if nothing bad happened when you saw one, then that was a good thing! *lol* The myth changed around the time of the Salem witch trials, when cats, especially black ones, were considered witches' familiars. It's weird, though, because in more ancient cultures, especially European, black dogs were the ones that were considered really bad-a sign of death. (Yes, Sirius Black's alter-ego in Harry Potter is based on an actual myth!) But that didn't carry on into America, luckily enough for all our black dogs. :)
