For me, I need to have a specific meaning just as a sort of gatekeeper mechanism so I don't go beserk and get a million tattoos all at once. But you're right, it is a personal thing. If someone feels happy about their tattoos, whatever kind of meaning they do or don't have, then I'd say that's great!
Generally, when giving advice, I suggest to people that some element of personal meaning is a good thing, when selecting a tattoo. I do this because I know very well that many people get tattoos they haven't thought about at all, and it's a way of introducing the idea of tattoos as something to be treasured.
I suppose one other thing to bear in mind is that absolutely everyone in the world asks what your tattoos 'mean', even if you never intended them to be anything other than decorative.
Something making you happy is a kind of meaning, in any case; really, it's the people whose tattoos don't make them happy are the ones who dislike and regret them.
Hope this makes sense!

Absolutely
The fact that you like it has meaning.
Every tattoo you get has meaning.
Even if you don't know what it is
at the time. It will always bring back
memories. They may not always be
good ones. Like getting a frog on your
hand, because six of your college
buddies did. You might forget exactly
what it stands for, or why you got it,
but the day you got it and the friends
you were with, will be a memory forever.
Think Before You Ink.......... Ink Is For Life
A tattoo doesn't have to be so serious. It
can just be for the fun of it. It should mean,
no more, or no less, than what it means
to you. No body else's business. Ink On.
I have a small crab on my ankle, everyone
expects a big explanation, well, there isn't
one. I just like how he looks. Sometimes
it's just the art work itself that matters.
All this being said..this doesn't mean that you
shouldn't give it serious thought before you ink.
Life is not erasible.......Even though people have
discovered ways to cover and lazer a tattoo, you
may not be able to stand any more, doesn't mean
that you won't remember the feelings behind it. Peace

I love some of the answers above, but wanted to reinforce the din.
Just that it makes you happy is more than enough meaning; deep or otherwise is irrelevant. Arguably, the only bad tattoo is one you don't like. In fact, it should be quite possible to have a meaningful tattoo that you hate.
I like symbolism & multiple meanings in my own art (skin or otherwise), but that's purely subjective. On others as long as they're happy & the art isn't offensive, life is good.

The fact that you like it and it makes you happy IS giving it meaning.
Even if its as simple as representing freedom of choice over your body, no matter how "un-meaningful" the tattoo seams. I have a bold, black spiral design on my mid-back that represents beauty, femininity, power. Whatever you want a tattoo to mean is good enough.

For most people any tattoo they have has a background or meaning. Some others they just have tattoos for the heck of it. So no, a tattoo doesn't HAVE to have a meaning unless you want it to.

No, I don't think that a tattoo has to have some sort of deep meaning. I look at tattoos as art for your body - sometimes it's just about you liking it.

To me, it does have to have some significant meaning... because no matter what I may really like a certain tattoo now, but I have NO IDEA how I will feel when I am 45...... but if it has meaning... at least it will ALWAYS mean something

Oh god no! Tattoos don't have to have any meaning whatsoever. People normally suggest that if you're going to get "one" tattoo that you make it mean something, since it is permenant. I don't think they should, you get what you want. The only tattoo that I have that has a meaning to it, i regret..only because it doesn't apply to me now...haha. It's nice, it just doesn't make sense now.

Sounds like you have the meaning. The Dalai Lama say that life is about the search for happiness. If this is what makes you happy you have achieved a step toward your own nirvana.
