Because tables are made for glasses, and not arses.
(Or so my Aunty Adele used to say.)

I think it is inappropriate to sit on tables for the same reason you wouldn't want to eat off a chair.

i sit on tables all the time, especially as a teacher. It's weird telling other people off for sitting on them. I think of major reason is the safety, and it's also generally a place that is used to either working or eating, either of which doesn't really help your clothes.

Tables were not made for sitting on; that's why they invented chairs!

its not, try jumping on opposite ends of a table with a friend , place your ankles behind your ears and shoot the ping pong ball to one another. It's fun for the whole family

i wonder why too..
i notice teachers doing that when they are lecturing too.. they would put half their bum onto the table when they speak.. as if they were so lazy to stand.. =D
but i like to sit on tables.. makes you stand out of the crowd.. =P

Sometimes people eat at tables. I know I don't want someone's butt where I am going to put my food.
