How would you begin a sentence with a gerund?

"Eating fast food is bad for you."

I think that if you are making a general statement about "eating" it becomes a noun. In English the noun form of a verb is always the gerund (like eating). In Spanish it is the infinitive that can become a noun. So it would be "Comer los alimentos rapido es mala para la salud" in this case.
BUT if you were keeping the verb feeling of the gerund like: "Running, he took off" it would still be the gerund form in Spanish "Corriendo, se fue." I guess you could say he left while he was eating "Comiendo, se fue"
Basically it depends on whether the verb is taking on noun characteristics (infinitive form in spanish) or keeping verb characteristics (verb form stays). In English the gerund is used both ways so it doesn't matter.

The phrase means: "Comer comidas rápidas es malo para ti." Like when you say: "She likes the 'drawing' I made", in this case "drawing" is not a gerund. But in Spanish you can start a sentence using an actual gerund if you invert the syntax (normal order of words in a sentence).

In Spanish, we always try not to start a sentence with a gerund.

Warning, double check some of the answers you got, their grammar ir wrong, they mistake gerund for infinitive. Infinitive in Spanish ends in " ar, er, ir". Gerunds end in "ando, endo".

In this case, you use the infinitive. Remember that the infinitive can mean both "to *verb*" (Necesito comer - I need TO EAT) or "*verb*ing" (Me gusta cantar - I like SINGING). So the correct word would be comer. Comiendo doesn't work, because it means eating AT A SPECIFIC TIME. For example, Estoy comiendo would be I am eating (right now!)

Just start with the verb because in Spanish for eat and eating you write the same comer. Like this "Comer los alimentos de preparación rápida es malo para ti".
