I have tried two recipes. I don't like "tequila-triple sec-lime juice" because it's like 90% hard liquor and I can't drink them casually. I don't like "tequila-margarita mix" because it's too sour.

Is there some recipe out there that keeps the liquor level down but doesn't get too sour or too sweet?

Nope a good margarita will ick your *** every time. But I can help you with the sour part.

Use the Mix, but then ADD 1/2 cup of fresh lime juice to each 2 cups of mix. That - believe it or not - will cut the sour immensely. My favorite mix is is the Jose Cuervo in the big jug.

The salt on the rim of the glass will also help cut the sour somewhat.

And if you really want a good margarita pitch in a shot glass of Vodka with it.

So , to recap:
Base Margarita: 2/3 mix to 1/3 tequila
Add 1/2 cup of fresh lime juice per 2 cups of mix.
Use salted glasses
add 1 shot of Vodka to kick it up a notch!

For classic drinks like the Margarita, the TRUE Daiquiri, Mojito, etc....follow the KISS principle - Keep It Simple Stupid.
A drink that requires no more than three ingredients should have no more than three ingredients. The quality of the drink is totally based on what you use to make it. Never ever ever ever ever ever use anything less in quality than Jose'. If you are trying to make good margaritas with Aristocrap??? you should be shot.

The traditional is the "tequila, triple-sec, lime juice." How you make it depends on your taste. Fresh lime juice is always the best, but if that is too tart for you, then try Rose's lime juice (it is sweetened) or try making your own version by mixing lime juice with simple syrup. The sweet lime juice is better than S&S mix or Margartia mix and you control the taste.

A better margarita is "tequila, cointreau (type of triple sec), and lime juice." or try "tequila, grand marnier, lime juice." These would be middle and top shelf drinks, respectively. Use a good gold or even silver tequila for these, say 1800, or even Patron gold or silver.

The drink is as good as or as bad you make it. Experiement and try things until you find your drink.
GOOD LUCK!! and Don't Drink and Drive!!!

Back off on the tequila a bit if you don't want it too strong. These are pretty stiff as-is, but very flavorful.

Real Margaritas

1 lime, halved
Kosher salt
1/2 cup freshly squeezed lime juice (5 limes)
2 tablespoons freshly squeezed lemon juice (1 lemon)
1 cup Triple Sec
1 cup white tequila
2 cups ice, plus extra for serving

If you like margaritas served in a glass with salt, rub the outside rims of 6glasses with a cut lime and dip each glass lightly into a plate of kosher salt.

Combine the lime juice, lemon juice, Triple Sec, tequila, and ice in a blender and puree. Place extra ice in a cocktail shaker. Fill with margarita mix, shake well, and strain into glasses.

This mix can also be added to a blender w/ ice to make a frozen margarita.

I find that straight tequila works best with a splash of fresh lime. Silver Patron is best as a shot, Gold is OK to mix but I prefer shots because after two or three your taste buds are useless anyways.
