What do you call this? I have seen condos that appear almost like a studio apartment but the one room is a living room and there is a small stair case which goes upstairs to an exposed bedroom that is almost on top of the living room. Is this a loft?

That's a loft. Townhouses are two story apartments or condos that are connected directly to their neighbors.
