KLOVE radio is running their telethon today, and are raising money for building churches in China.

My wife thinks any extra money should go to feeding the hungry and helping the homeless.

My girlfriend thinks church building is the most important thing you can do, and teaching the gospel of Jesus Christ is the only thing that our mission should be.

What say you? I'm screwed either way here. Literally and figuratively.

Neither. “Teach a man to fish” and all that, right? I think they should use the money on the following things
1. water purification
2. medical facilities
3. seeds, and livestock
4. training for the above mentioned. The best way to end homelessness and hunger is to make these places self sufficient. Then if you feel the need to cram the Bible down their throats, do it by showing how kind people of your faith are. Then they’ll come to you, right?

I see your point. Most missionaries are concerned with teaching the word and converting while being charitable. Sometimes, in poverty-stricken countries, you actually have to convert to receive the charity, which isn't really the best way to do things (The Inquisition comes to mind). As a Christian, I understand Churches need to be built, even though some are more ellaborate than really necessary (MegaChurches are like corporations). Small Churches are relatively cheap to build and have minimal variable and fixed costs. If you can do that and use any extra to help with charaties, then that would be the best way to go.

Building the church, most churches will make efforts to help feed the hungry, our church just gave away a whole semi load of food to the needy in the community........so the church is important....not only are the churches important for teaching the gospel, but they should be supporting their missionaries.

Does she think Jesus would have left the poor to starve while he concentrated on raising money to build a church?
Surely Christianity is about compassion, kindness, love and acceptance (the qualities of Jesus) not about creating buildings.
Teaching the Gospel will not save starving people but food will.

In order to provide a service, you must devote funds to both the actual service, administration, and marketing/fundraising. I would suggest building some churches to provide a gathering place where people can go to help the community even more and to raise more funds to feed more people in addition to devoting the majority of the funds to actually feeding people.

I realize you're being a troll, but thought I'd answer the question.

you dont need to take money off people to build big fancy churches, remember jesus said "wherever 2 or more of ye are gathered in my name, there i will be in your midst"..you could split up and meet in other peoples' homes or just build a plain basic building.however feeding the poor is the priority.

what are you doing anyway with a girlfriend and a wife?are you mormon?

Churches are big businesses and just like a business, they want to expand their revenues. Stop giving your money to churches and this will stop their expansion.
