I used to have great eyesight and could see very far. Now though, i spend a fair amount of time on the Computer but recently, i have noticed that occasionally in class, i have to squint to see the board and yet none of my mates have too. I have halfed the amount of timwe i spend on a computer and hope to half that soon as well and i am doing other stuff i enjoy such as reading and doing sports.

I was wondering, what is a healthy amount of time on a computer either a day or a week. (In hours)

And, how long, if ever, will it take for my eyesight to get better because, no offence to people who wear glasses but i don't want them as they dont suit me at all.

Thanks for the help in advance!

Eye deterioration is common, since the fact that we are humans! I'm not exactly sure in your case why your eye sight could be getting "worse". It IS possible your eyes are deteriorating or they are doing what's known as "switching sights".

It's not exactly the amount of time you spend on the computer, it's the amount you spend looking at it at one time. Do you stare at the screen and read something? Do you play a game that makes your eyes scan the screen quickly? Do you stay up late on the computer? I would say the best thing to do is what they say in those little video game safety booklets. Maybe take a 15 minute break after using the computer for 30 minutes to 45 minutes. Your eyes need a break from all the light and "action" they are receiving from games and videos.

Even reading needs a break also, I'm not saying you can't read, but if you feel your eyes straining, or they ache when you're reading, stop and rest your eyes for a bit. Maybe not read as fast or even just close your eyes and relax. If you are reading at night, make sure you have adaquit lighting. If you don't have enough lighting then you risk putting stress on your pupils and iris's by not supplying enough light to read black text in a book. Even when on the computer, the contrast of light on a computer to the darkness of night is bad. Maybe try turning on a lamp, if you have one, in the room where your computer is, or get a reading light.

It is possible for your eyes to get "better" I suppose. Some have said over time and others have said they won't at all. I can say that I have never needed glasses and all my other siblings do. I am on the computer days, and sometimes when I don't take my own advice, at nights. There are "eye exercises" whereas they are supposed to help your eyes get better. I have never tried them but you may if you truly want to.

If worst comes to worse and you are having a horrible time seeing or reading, I'd get an eye exam. You only have one set of eyes, even if you don't want glasses you may have to have them, don't let your eyes waste away while being stubborn about "looking cool with the crowd".

I'm not sure about anyone else, but I have amazing eyesight. I am on the computer for hours and I am still farsighted, so I'm not one to say that using a computer makes you near-sighted. If the screen is up to your face possibly, or if when you read a book you put it straight up to your face.

You're welcome!

Lxl, well query. Supposedly dressed in contacts versus glasses slows the development of nearsightedness. As others say, you'll be able to get lasik while your approximately twenty years. If your younger and nearsighted you would take a look at a moderate measure of studying glasses. It would support gradual matters down somewhat. Those carrots, although it sounds loopy, would have anything to it. There are a few islands and far flung cultures in which the children do not want glasses. When those identical children are relocated to giant civilized cultures they get myopia. Is it the nutrition, or what. Nobody turns out to understand. They've made plenty of growth in lasik and many others., however relatively the scientific individuals do not relatively have an reply for nearsightedness. Is it nutrition, I do not know. With all of the advances in treatment and many others. the scientific crowd does not have an reply. They'll let you know that individuals had been nearsighted and simply needed to are living with it within the olden days. I'm certain there used to be a few. When the scientific individuals say it's approximately the identical as it is regularly been, do not suppose it. That's bull.

The incidence of myopia (near sightedness) is increasing due to sitting infront of the computer. It is also known as Computer Vision Syndrome a result of prolonged staring at computer images (or pixels), which are more difficult for the eye to focus on than letters on a printed page.

-You should have no more than two hours of screen time each day.
-maintains the correct posture
-The screen should be at least 24 inches away, feet should rest flat on the floor, and back should be straight at all times.
- take a break every 10 to 15 minutes to allow eyes to rest.
-make sure you don't eat any foods high in caffeine before sitting down at the computer for an extended period of time, The stimulant can make it even more difficult for the eye to focus on computer pixels.

Askmen.com suggest
Keep the computer screen four to nine inches below eye level.
Try a glare reduction filter. Filters that carry the AOA Seal of Acceptance are available at office supply stores and can enhance screen contrast and increase character legibility.
Screen brightness should be the same as the brightness of other objects in the room.

they have reading test online to determine the health of your eyes. clik the link and scroll down http://ca.askmen.com/sports/health/17b_mens_health.html

good luck.

I am a 15 year old female and my eyesight isn't the best either. Right now i wear contacts cause i'm 20/40 20/50 for my eyes. I don't think your eye sight can improve (as far as i know), but you can stop it from getting worse. You said that you like to read, make sure you have PLENTY of light. Try eating carrots as well, they are good for your eyes.

Hormones can do that to you. Have your blood pressure and eyeball pressure tested.

You realize there is a whole group of people that sit behind a computer screen for a living? 40 Hours or more a week..then go home and play some computer game.

I doubt that it is healthy but don't over do the harmfulness either.

They wont get better. the exact thing happened to me. Everyone laughed at me for squinting so hard. i couldn't see the board but i didn't need glasses all the time. now i just wear them when i need to see and you might have to do the same. but i will warn you that your prescription will get stronger every time so every time i get my eyes checked i have to change. and the computer thing you shouldn't spend more than 30min unless its like a report or something.
