They can, and if they had income over the limit to have to file, then they are required to.

An inmate can file a joint return if they're married - if they do, they DO need to sign the return.

Do you mean if they actually worked most of the year and then went to prison? I'm not really sure but, I would think that they would have given up the right to file when they broke the law and went to prison. Now the tax payer is taking care of that person and those tax dollars that the person may have made should just go to help take care of that person while they are incarcerated...that is just my opinion though...

If your income is low enough you may even qualify for the eic and get extra money back for being in prison!!!

If they made enough income during the calendar year they went in, before going in, certainly. After that year, if they are still in, there is no need to - they are living on our taxpayer dollars.

Why would they need to? They don't exactly meet the quota for income in prison!!!!
