blacks aren't the only ones that don't tip. I'm white and I tip no one only because after I get what I come for I usually have a dime left over or just enough for gas to put in my car to get home. I used to work in places where you relay on tips so I know what you mean but you have to be thankful for what you do get and keep your mind open to why someone might give you a bigger tip then another person and don't include yourself or how they think you did in that mental picture.

I was a waitress for aperiod of time and I rarely got good tips from black customers. And it wasn't just dinners but during cocktail hours when huge tabs were being rung up in a busy night club when you got tons of customers. And honestly they didn't tip for s**t. Also old people don't really tip good either. and it wasn't that I was a bad waitress I busted my ***! And at certain clubs NO they don't have mandatory gratuity! And waitress' only get paid a few dollars an hour! And when you ring up a huge bill on drinks having to run back and forth to refill drinks and you got 10+ other tables to serve and they only tip you a few bucks you get pissed!

Like Tara said tips are NOT a servers only income.

Crappy service means no tip. Less than good service gets a small tip. Etc.

If they don't like that they don't get good tips they either need to find another job or look towards themselves for improvement.

to the guy from australia:

Tipping is customary in the USA because servers are usually paid much less than minimum wage here. So they make their money depending on how well they do their job. If restaurants were to pay their servers a living wage, the prices for food would be SO much higher. It is quite cheap to eat out in the USA compared to Scandanavia, and central Europe (where tipping isn't as customary, and the servers are paid a living wage).

I waited tables for many years. Tips are not a servers only income and they are called a "gratuity" for a reason. If you don't treat your customers the way they expect you to then you will not get a tip.

In Australia we don't tip people for doing their job. we figure your employer pays you to take the food from the kitchen to the table, or bags from the lobby to the hotel room.
as a nation we are bemused by the tipping culture.
I would love to know more about why it is done? And why you pay people to do what they are already being paid to do?
If I don't pay a tip (and i won't) will my food not be delivered or my bags lost?

Why don't waiters or waitress then thankyou as you leave for the tip. If I leave a tip and no one says boo, do you think I will leave a descent tip next time?

My ex-wife was a waitress for many years and it is a relatively well-known fact in that industry that religious groups are the absolute worst tippers.

Tips are not required and last I checked you are paid on an hourly basis, so your income does not depend on customer tips.
