I have just come back from a weekend in Rome and we got the train in from the airport. It's cheap, quick and reliable. However another traveller told me that you can get shared taxi's at the airport - you go to the relevant desk and they arrange for you to share with other people going to a similar place and the fares are pre set.
Things that we did were:
Trevi Fountain
Spanish Steps
The Forum (highly recommended)
Pantheon
Vatican City
Sistine Chapel
Coleseum
Vittoriano
A tip for the Sistine Chapel, before you go have a look on the internet and prebook a tour - we used Green Line Tours. They will pick you up and get you into the Vatican Museums and avoid all the queues and believe me, those queues are something else! However the problem we had was that the tour guide went on and on and after 45 mins of only seeing a couple of things we went off on our own. I would recommend that as soon as you are in, you go off and do your own thing. The Sistine Chapel is clearly marked and the corridoors on the way are painted beautifully, the chapel itself is tiny but the paintings are awe inspiring.
To eat, the best places are all down the the little side alleys, just wander down and find a little place with al fresco dining - we didn't have any dodgy meals.
The Forum was amazing and it was my personal favourite. You could just imagine what it was like when it was still standing.
As for the comments about the train station, we stayed right opposite in the Radisson (really trendy and funky) and did not feel worried or hassled at all.
We wanted to take a boat trip down the river but lots of people had booked up on line and not all of them could get on....
I was a bit dubious before I went, but I am totally converted, I absolutely loved it and had a fabulous time. I think it's great you are taking your mum, the both of you will have a brilliant time. Good luck and have fun.
ps - be prepared for the queue's, that is the only problem...

My husband and that i went to Italy very last twelve months, and for the three days we were in Rome, we stayed at StarHotels Michelangelo. that's about a three block walk from St. Peter's sq., from that you'll get proper of entry to Vatican city and the Vatican Museums as well as St. Peter's. i presumed the hotel became very genuine looking and the lodging were large. I booked a eco-friendly Line go back and forth excursion - that's a bus that is going everywhere in the city preventing on the numerous sights, and also you'll get on only outdoors of St. Peter's sq.. You get out and word what you want to work out, stay see you later as you want and then get on the bus at the same time as it comes lower back round. It makes an limitless loop - that became a sturdy funding and that i especially recommend it. It wasn't an open proper holiday, yet i needed to get off and walk with the help of the numerous stops, so it labored nicely for me.

cool present
directly opposite the doors of the terminal, there are 3 public transport bus stops. the first one goes to termini, the second one goes to anagnina and i dont know where the third one goes. get the one to anagnina - €1 per person and €1per large suitcase. go downstairs when you get to anagnina and this is the end of the metro line. a €1 ticket will get you 70 minutes on the metro - more than enough to get you to your hotel. there are other private companies like terravision but they are more expensive.
as for things to do in Rome, i hope you're going for 5 or 6 days cos there's loads to do. try www.roma2000.it for ideas.
enjoy
