Go to format cell - on the number tab select custom, then under the word "type" put in 000000 - this will keep the data as a number (rather than text) but will allow the lead zeros.

Either type an apostrophy ( ' ) in front of the number, which converts it to a "text", or format the cell to be a number that has as many digits as you need (Do a Custom format of "000000").

You need to format the cell to allow leading zeros. To do this, you can click on format, select cells, then text.
