Well, there are examples the "great men" have done, but that doesn't mean God approves.

Moses, for example, had one male from each tribe killed by his men to set an example.

Since God wasn't too thrilled with the way he asked the stone for water, what makes anyone think God was thrilled with that action.

Jesus set the tone for it. It didn't want any further martyrs and saw the future. So he ordered his disciples to sell all they own and buy a sword. But he also said those who live by the sword die by the sword and order the sword be put away when he was captured.

Jesus was an artisan and expected everyone to be artisans, that includes with a sword.

The idea is to use the sword only when necessary and to not injure the other party. That requires a high degree of skill. The idea is the literally put the Fear of God into the other person. Let them know they aren't as good as you are with that sword and you don't make mistakes.

Since Jesus also said of the Soldiers ask you to carry their packs 5 miles, carry them 10 miles inplies not conscientious objection to soliders and the concept of warefare.

Jesus also said give unto Ceasar what is Ceasars.

So it's a balancing act.

Jesus did not intend the Christians be killed in the Arena.

Dead Christians spread no word.

Christians, however, should not invade or attack only defend and repell.

In the Old Testament, God ordered the Israelites to: “Take vengeance on the Midianites for the Israelites” (Numbers 31:2). See also Deuteronomy 20:16-17, “However, in the cities of the nations the LORD your God is giving you as an inheritance, do not leave alive anything that breathes. Completely destroy them--the Hittites, Amorites, Canaanites, Perizzites, Hivites and Jebusites--as the LORD your God has commanded you.” Exodus 17:16 proclaims, “He said, "For hands were lifted up to the throne of the LORD. The LORD will be at war against the Amalekites from generation to generation." Also, 1 Samuel 15:18, “Go and completely destroy those wicked people, the Amalekites; make war on them until you have wiped them out.” So, obviously God is not against all war. Jesus is always in perfect agreement with the Father (John 10:30), so we cannot argue that war was only God’s will in the Old Testament. God does not change (Malachi 3:6; James 1:17).
Ecclesiastes 3:8 declares, “there is…a time to love and a time to hate, a time for war and a time for peace. In a world filled with sin, hatred, and evil (Romans 3:10-18), war is inevitable. Some wars are more “just” than others, but all wars are ultimately the result of sin. Christians should not desire war, but neither are Christians to oppose the government God has placed in authority over them (Romans 13:1-4; 1 Peter 2:17).

This is hard to accept but the Jews were and still are God`s chosen people, the commandment `Thou shalt not kill` was directly telling them that they were not to kill one another over disputes etc, and yet we read how God leads them to their promised land were they have to take on many battles,so the conclusion is that in certain circumstances war is sometimes right,a nation has the right to defend it`self against the aggressor and thereby protect it`s innocent citizens, young and old.
This is never the same as deliberately taking another`s life in cold blood either in rage or for revenge.

Well, if you're killing in war for the right rason then yes, because if you read carefully there were several points throughout the bible where God helped people win wars. He helped David slay Goliath with a stone and slingshot. He helped this one guy(forgot his name) win a war just by having that guy rasie his arms. Just read.

It doesn't matter. I recently found a site you might be interested in. I'll post the link in the sources.
And here are some of the reasons that it is okay to kill people. (I'm only posting the short ones. You can read the rest at http://www.evilbible.com/Murder.htm )

Kill People Who Don't Listen to Priests
Anyone arrogant enough to reject the verdict of the judge or of the priest who represents the LORD your God must be put to death. Such evil must be purged from Israel. (Deuteronomy 17:12 NLT)

Kill Witches

Kill Homosexuals
"If a man lies with a male as with a women, both of them shall be put to death for their abominable deed; they have forfeited their lives." (Leviticus 20:13 NAB)

Kill Fortunetellers
A man or a woman who acts as a medium or fortuneteller shall be put to death by stoning; they have no one but themselves to blame for their death. (Leviticus 20:27 NAB)

Death for Hitting Dad
Whoever strikes his father or mother shall be put to death. (Exodus 21:15 NAB)

Death for Cursing Parents
1) If one curses his father or mother, his lamp will go out at the coming of darkness. (Proverbs 20:20 NAB)
2) All who curse their father or mother must be put to death. They are guilty of a capital offense. (Leviticus 20:9 NLT)

Death for Adultery
If a man commits adultery with another man's wife, both the man and the woman must be put to death. (Leviticus 20:10 NLT)

Death for Fornication
A priest's daughter who loses her honor by committing fornication and thereby dishonors her father also, shall be burned to death. (Leviticus 21:9 NAB)

Death to Followers of Other Religions
Whoever sacrifices to any god, except the Lord alone, shall be doomed. (Exodus 22:19 NAB)

Kill Nonbelievers
They entered into a covenant to seek the Lord, the God of their fathers, with all their heart and soul; and everyone who would not seek the Lord, the God of Israel, was to be put to death, whether small or great, whether man or woman. (2 Chronicles 15:12-13 NAB)

Lovely book, the bible. Isn't it amazing that only a select few parts are taught?

It doesn't have to be in war. Killing for disobedience or having other 'faiths' is recommended.

"If there be found among you, within any of thy gates which the LORD thy God giveth thee, man or woman, that hath wrought wickedness in the sight of the LORD thy God, in transgressing his covenant, And hath gone and served other gods, and worshipped them, either the sun, or moon, or any of the host of heaven, which I have not commanded; ... Then shalt thou bring forth that man or that woman, which have committed that wicked thing, unto thy gates, even that man or that woman, and shalt stone them with stones, till they die."
