have you not seen the news in the last 5 years?
short answer.. YES it is dangerous, but statistically, you BF stands a better chance of dying here in the States than he will in combat.
last year alone there was something like 35 thousand deaths due to car accidents. there have been less than 35 HUNDRED deaths of servicemembers in Iraq in the last 4 years.

OK, let me set your mind at ease a little. I just got back from Ar Ramadi Iraq this past June. I spent a year there. It's THE hot spot of Iraq. I made it home safe and sound. Most of my unit made it back.
Yes, Iraq is dangerous, and if your BF is infantry, he will probably be in Anbar Province, whos capital is Ramadi.
However, if he is NOT infantry, he could go anywhere in Iraq and there are some places where they haven't had a shot fired, a bomb explode, or any other problems. They actually have tours of biblical sights in Northern Iraq. But, that's far north of where I was.
In Anbar, the Marines are the backbone of the operation, and they have state of the art equipment, they are very well trained, they look out for each other, and even the Army guys like me (former Marine gone Army) look out for them and vice versa.
To be scared for someone heading to war is natural. Support him, pray for him, and let him know you are proud of him. That is the best thing you can do.
My prayers are with you both.

Statistically it is more dangerous in the inner city of several major cities than it is for an individual soldier in Iraq. Detroit is the one most often quoted. In another manner it can be more or less dangerous depending on his location in Iraq and his job there. Don’t lose sleep over it, because worry is something that will nag you but something you cannot do anything about.

No one knows what will be going on one year from now, a lot can change. I was in the Marines for 6 years and was never told 1 year ahead of time where we were going.

I don't mean to be rude but do you not watch news programs on TVor read newspapers?Something is happening there by the minute that is dangerous. You just have to be strong for him and let him do the job he signed up to do.Give him support and strength if you love him.He or you won't be alone because there are a lot of boyfriends, girlfriends, sons, daughters, mothers and fathers fighting for our freedom so pray for his safety as well as the others.

No way McCain said its safe and hes a republican so you can believe him. People walk down the streets safely. people go to work and stop at Starbucks and while sipping their hot coffee laughingly discuss politics and the coming day of work. :)
Children are seen skipping along merrily in parks with a fistful of balloons.
Oh yes its safe there. its a safe and beautiful mecca of Mideast cultural wonderment.
The US led occupation has done more than liberate the poor oppressed people of Iraq it has given them a life filled with such hope and opportunity as to leave me envious but still tearfully optimistic of just what the future may bring.

Yes and it is not event save for ordinary Iraqis. Iraq is close to civil war or already at one. The power vacuum left by Saddam is just too much to fill in.

You know what my dear, Even USA may not be safe for him, because the only thing is to stay away from trouble. Especially politics is a dirty game. If you boyfriend is one of trouble causes, for sure you shld be worried but if not then relax his going to be fine.

have you viewed and listened to any news lately???? your answer is there! sorry to be so blunt but ???? where are you living? after reviewing other answers I agree with Harley, the military doesn't tell their enlisteds where they're going a year in advance. could there be an alterior motive for your boyfriend's statement to you? something you might want to think over.

Yes it is dangerous, and you should be proud of your boyfriend as he is a hero for joining and serving his country.
May G-d bless and kept him and his fellow servicemembers safe.
