I've been on paroxetine for about 10 years and have slowly gained massive amounts of weight, depsite loads of exercise and a healthy diet. I'm going to the doctor next week to see about changing as I've been going to the gym 3 times a week and eating healthy for nearly a year now and not lost an ounce!!! Anyone else had similar probs on paroxetine?

Sertraline which I am on now and have been for 18 onths has decresed my appetite for the most part and I have lost weight on it.

Some are notorious for making you put on weight regardless of diet and exercise. Speak to your GP.

I've been taking paroxetine for longer than I care to remember but I don't think it has affected my weight. However, I have put on a bit of weight, but I've put that down to getting into my 50s when we seem to fatten up anyway. I eat very healthily, and do a great deal of walking, and work physically hard at my job for 9 hours a day, so maybe that is keeping me fairly steady.
As an aside, what do you think of paroxetine? Do you think you will ever be able to come off it? Does it have any side effects? Email me if you wish.

I was on Cymbalta, and while they say this antidepressant does not cause weight gain, since I have been off of it (11 months) I have lost over 50 pounds, so I do attribute Cymbalta as causing this problem for me. Unfortunately, I think that is a side effect of most of those antidepressant drugs, so I would talk to your doctor about possible alternatives to help you with your depression. I was on medication for 6 years, so I know that it does help, and it does work, but now that I am no longer on Cymbalta I've found a holistic way of treating myself and I take a herbal supplement called Holy Basil. Also, have you ever had your thyroid checked? If you have an under active thyroid it will definitely cause you to gain weight, and it mimics the symptoms of depression. I found that I had that problem so I am quiet sure that attributed to my depression in the beginning. Good luck.

I'm also on Paroxetine, (11 years) but haven't noticed anything drastic with my weight. I also take a load of other meds for various problems, including Diabetes, so maybe they counteract each other..

I have been on many antidepressants and its hard to say for sure if it was them that made me put the weight on or the other meds that I was taking.
antidepressants I have been on are
Remeron (mirtazapine)
Effexor (venlafaxine)
Anafranil (clomipramine)
Zoloft (sertraline)
Luvox (fluvoxamine)
Prozac (fluoxetine)

the only one I ever lost weight on believe it or not was Prozac.
with the other meds when I was on them I would not loss it any but I did get to a point where I stopped putting anymore on.

Do not listen to any doctor who says an anti depressant won't make you gain weight. THEY ALL MAKE YOU GAIN WEIGHT. Every single one. For some reason anti-depressants make you retain water, increase your appetite, and it is impossible to lose the weight. Prozac, Effexor, Zoloft, Paxil, Lexapro, etc., etc., they all do. Wellbutrin doesn't make you gain - it has a stimulant effect.
Some mood stabilizers will help lose weight. I know topamax does. See about a diuretic you can take.
