The spine is one of the most vital parts of the human body. The chart outlines what organs and tissues are affected by specific vertebrae in the spine.

Upper Neck, Upper Cervical Spine (C1 - C2)
• C1 - Brain, Nasal and Palette Glands, Lungs, Heart, Spleen, Kidney, Stomach, Liver, Large Intestines
• C2 - Eye, Sinuses, Brain, Nasal and Palette Glands
Mid/Lower Neck, Cervical Spine (C3 – C7)
• C3 - Eye, Sinuses, Nasal and Palette Glands,
• C4 - Eye, Sinuses, Nasal and Palette Glands, Sublingual Glands, Submaxilary Glands
• C5 - Parotid Gland, Sublingual Glands, Submaxilary Glands
• C6 - Parotid Gland, Thyroid
• C7 - Thyroid, Lungs

Mid Back, Thoracic Spine (T1 - T12)
• T1 - Lungs, Heart, Parotid Gland, Carotid Artery, Pulmonary Artery
• T2 - Lungs, Heart, Parotid Gland, Carotid Artery
• T3 - Lungs, Heart, Stomach, Pulmonary Artery, Carotid Artery
• T4 - Liver
• T5 - Stomach
• T6 - Pancreas
• T7 - Spleen
• T8 - Liver

If your MRI shows herniation and bulging ;spinal stenosis or narrowing ( probably because of the bulging and bone spurs) or if there is radiculopathy with radiculopathy changes, or degenerative disc disease or severe cervical cord compression of the C4 up to C7; ; you should consider surgery to avoid further permanent neurological damage such as paralysis of your arms and legs. Or if you have severe headaches, pains on your neck, shoulder, lower legs or lower backs, symptoms of falling forward; tripping, or dropping things a lot; or find it hard to stand and urinate; you should consider surgery..

However there are other methods of treatment aside from the Cervical Fusion or Anterior Cervical Decompression Fusion surgery. (ACDF) Sometimes, complete removal of the vertebrae is recommended or vertebrectomy esp if there is considerable calcium deposits.

Other alternative tx: A case in point:

Management of cervical disc herniation with upper cervical chiropractic care.

An MRI of the cervical spine demonstrated a C6-C7 herniated nucleus pulposus. A needle electromyogram examination confirmed the presence of a C6-C7 radiculopathy with radiculopathic changes from C4-C7. X-ray analysis showed that the atlas and axis were misaligned.” The patient was adjusted using grostic procedures by hand. Within one month there were dramatic improvements in all subjective and objective findings At a one year follow-up it was concluded that surgery was not necessary

Another alternative tx is application of moist heating pad.. Use of a breathing, humidifier machine to also alleviate the sinus headaches as the herniated discs between C4-C7 involve the sinuses and the sublingual and parotid glands as well as the thyroid. gland. Another method of tx is the epidural injections of cortisone. for pain management.

Then there is this small home unit, battery operated machine called TENS machine. It does help immensely in managing the numbness and pain! It greatly curbs the pain when on the computer, asleep, driving, on planes, movie theater, etc. It cost about $250 .. It helps to keep the neck and shoulder muscles relaxed and is great for the headaches and sleep. . Since the TENS unit is battery operated, you can wear it any time which makes it invaluable. The TENS unit is battery operated, has 10 pre-programs and 1 manual program and has 4 electrodes which can be placed in various locations depending on the type of pain..

I hope this helps you decide as to what mode of tx to take to improve the quality of your life in managing the pain suffered from these herniated discs..

ADDTl DETAILS:

:Herniated Disc - Herniation of the disc occurs when the outer fibrous band begins to bulge outward, a condition sometimes referred to as a slipped disc. In reality the disc has not slipped out of place. The bulge of the herniated disc can impinge on or compress the spinal cord causing pain. Surgery may include removal of the bulging area to relieve the impingement. The program present here can also reduce the herniation and relieve symptoms. A herniated disc can be caused by poor posture, poor working environment, improper bed, heavy head or back gear, shock loads and/or poor diet. Disc herniation can be diagnosed using an MRI or other scanning methods but not by a standard X-ray.

I am sorry that life feels so difficult for you! I have not heard of any of this type of treatment, but there is promising things going with stem cell research. You are still young and have a whole lot of living ahead of you. Have you had any counseling to help you deal with both of your losses? A renewed outlook on life could let you have the quality of life you deserve even if it is done with paralysis. I know I have no idea the pain and misery you are going through, but I do know there are many ways to adapt your life to still lead a full and rewarding life. It has been a long time since your injury and maybe you have not had the benefit of what's available to newly injured people. Make an appt with an occupational therapist who may be able to help you find a more comfortable way to live life. And don't give up! See a therapist to help you through this rough spot. Your life is valuable and you just don't even realize how many lives your own touches. I bet if you think long enough you could come up with several lives you may have influenced. Join a support group for bereavement as well as one for spinal cord injury. They can be a great source of comfort and great resource for therapies, doctors, etc... I hope I have helped and not offended you. Best wishes for you and you will be in my thoughts!
