A few years back, BOTH of the nails on my big toes were ingrown. One so severely that the entire nail was pulled out... the other nail was cut on both sides vertically from the tip of the nail to the base of the nail---after many numbing injections of course. The nail that was removed, the doc took a pair of pliers, grabbed onto the big nail and gave it one good YANK and the entire nail came out in one piece---of COURSE I felt NONE of this except the needles themselves--which by the way Hurt like crazy for a few seconds...the toes were wrapped with tons of gause bandage and I was sent home and told to stay totally off my feet and elevate them for 24 hours.... There was a LOT of blood and they hurt greatly for the first 24 hours... after that, they hurt less and less. To this day, the nail totally removed has NEVER grown back and there has NEVER been another problem with it... HOWEVER, the other nail that was just cut down each side has grown back SEVERAL times and became ingrown again each time I had it cut...Some people's toe nails just curve INWARD at the tips automatically and they will Always have an ingrown unless they permanently have the nail removed and the area around the nail root cortorized so a nail won't ever grow back. I couldn't go back to wearing regular shoe after the toe nail surgery for about a MONTH. Different people have different reactions to the toe nail surgery and need differing amounts of treatment...but, if you never want to go through the ingrown "experience" again, I would recommend having the doctor permanently remove the toe nail.

As someone who had a problem with ingrown toenails.......I can tell you from experience at least on my part. When you go to the doc they will first evaluate it, then most likely give you a few shots in the area to numb it up then they will start cutting the nail(sometimes complete removal is required), once nail problem is dealt with then its antibiotics for infection. They will most likely have you wearing some type of sandal/flip flop after the removal.
I have since learned to let my big toe nails grow a little longer than the rest of my nails to prevent this problem. My wife doesn't like that but it works for me.

They give an injection in your toe to numb it. Then they take this blade like thing and cut vertically down your toenail. Then they take these pliars and twist and pull that piece of toenail until it comes off at the roots. Then they take this scoop thing and scoop out all the tissue and infection that's there up under where the toenail used to be. Then they bandage it up and tell you to keep a cotton ball up under your remaining toenail. And everywhere you go, SOMEONE will always be bumping into or stepping on that one toe and it hurts like mutha.

But once those ingrown toenails are gone, life is good. It's well worth it....

I have had mine removed over 10 times, finally had to have them removed permanetly. The regular removal is simple, they numb the toe (actually the most painful part) then take a 1/3 or a 1/2 depending on how much is needed. The relief is immediate, the pain of the wound and it healing is way...way less then when the nail is in

Ingrowns suck! They'll probably do minor surgery. They'll numb your toe, cut your toenail where it's ingrown, clean as best they can, stuff it with gauze, wrap your toe up like a mummy and then give you antibiotics you add to water to soak your toe in. At least that's what happened to my toe twice!
