If you system board supports the chip, update your bios from the manufacturers website. Got into your bios and find the CPU frequency. It should be running at least at 166 or better to get your processor speed to what it should be. Or if it allows set it to auto. Hope that helps.

Amd Processor Speed

Something is not right w/ your PC because the slowest Athlon XP runs at 1.33Ghz and the fastest at 2.2Ghz (a 400fsb Barton). If you really have the latter, it is miserably downclocked a lot. Also the Barton cores have locked multipliers, so it would be impossible to downclock them to 900Mhz level.

Better check with CPUZ first what processor you really have and at what bus speed and multiplier it is running.

I just hope you do not have a processor that was re-marked by unscrupolous people.

Hmm, first of all, we need to checkup if it's really the speed your processor is running on your computer or it's just AMD Cool and Quiet feature working.

First you need to download CPU-Z from here :

http://www.cpuid.com/cpuz.php

After this, look at your processor speed after you download and use CPU-Z. If it's constantly changing , especially if you are playing games, then it's just the Cool and Quiet.

But it's it's consistently at 900Mhz, then probably your motherboard isn't correctly configured to use the processor. You should consult your motherboard manual to change your FSB settings on your motherboard.

U dont need to worry about the speed..
Ur AMD processor have a technology which automatically clocks down the processor speed when it is ideal or at low load.
to confirm this.. just download CPU-Z.exe from www.cpuid.com
u should run that utiliy and start any program after that.(keep running that cpuz.exe) . u will notice the variation in speed in the cpu frequency column when there is variation in load to CPU.
its same technology that intel have but with diffrent names.

In general case windows is slowing down automatically your processor - to change this go to Display Properties /Right click on Desktop, Properties / inside in Screen Saver, Power you will find power scheme of computer - changed it to Always ON and make sure that everything is on MAX :)You can also find some good utilities to command this behavior directly.
Also as a general tip install more - up to 2 GB - RAM. This will greatly improve performance.
Best Luck
