a friend asked me to call her because she needed someone to talk to. so i did. i asked her what was wrong and wat happened, so she told me. i didn't kno what to say after this... so i kept quiet. then she changed the subject to something completely different.

i think that i was being insensitive to her... but i really didn't know what to do... i just listened to her, and answered her questions and i also tried to be funny bcos i didn't know the right words to say. after a few mins, she had to go... i msged her a "cheer up" msg and tried to be funny again after this.

have u guys got any suggestions how i can treat something like this in the future? because i always want to be there for my friends, but i really don't know what to say when they are upset.

you did the right thing..when the people you love are that upset..just let them come to you and tell you what is bothering them..but you can tell them that you will always be there for them..and mean it..

It all depends on the level of which you require to be serious.

If it's something like breaking up with their loved one, or losing something precious to them, a joke will do best. Laughter is the best medicine. But if it is something like your friend losing a life, as in, their dog died or parent(s) died, you should be more comforting than you ever were before. Give them hopes and show them that you are there for whatever they need. That's the best thing one can do for a friend.

Just be he rock when she needs your strength and be there when she needs a shoulder to cry on, and always try to keep an open mind when she needs someone to listen to her and thats the best you can do, basically just be yourself.

Keep on being a good friend=)

thank you for being an understanding and true friend--you are a noble person to care enough to listen to a friend in need. I only hope they will do it for you. You don't and won't always have an answer--but you will always have the ears to listen---so thank you and good luck---just relax and let them speak--that is enough to offer.

sweetheart what you did was more than enough, she probably wanted to be listened only and you did listen to her,the 1 thing that you can make is make her go out a little bit to stop thinking about her problem

i think being there to listen already made her feel better. she needs someone to talk to, right? this kind of situation happened to me too. and after her long and heartbreak story, i just hugged her and told her that i'm gonna be there for her.

hmmm if you really have nothing to say then tell them. Also tell them that it's OK and being funny is good.
