If it's in a flat pot then make sure it is watered very often, possibly twice a day. I killed my little bonsai tree through underwatering.

Bonsai trees come in many shapes, forms, and species, so advice is very difficult to give with just the info you have posted.
Take the tree to a local nursery or a bonsai club, if you can find one to identify the tree. Once you know what kind of plant it is, you can find care instructions for it.
Some bonsai naturally grow quickly, others are very slow growers. As the tree grows, you'll have to learn about leaf, branch and root pruning to keep the bonsai in good shape.
All potted plants, bonsai are no exception, require very well draining soil. The smaller the pot, the more often it needs to be watered. You should only water when the soil is dry. Less often, but very deep watering is preferred over frequent shallow watering. With a very small tree, the best way to accomplish this is to fill a bowl, bucket or sink with water. Then submerge the tree in the pot into the water and leave it there until all air bubbles stop coming out. Then take out the potted tree and let water drain from the bottom. Then you can put it back where it you usually have it.
For a larger plant, you want to give it water the pot unti water starts coming out of the bottom. Then let the pot drain of excess water.
Different trees require different care instructions regarding light, fertilizer and pruning as well as dormancy and winter care. So find out what that tree is as soon as you can.

If you look in local directories (most papers have them) you might find a bonsai club. The folks in such a club will be able to link you up with answers to questions. Go along and have a look )
I went to one after being given a Bonsai, and within 3 years had over 50 of my own. Its an addictive and very enjoyable hobby

not much care is needed...
you can put the same soil that was in the pot before... some of the trees grow only in perticular soil..
see what kind of Bonsai is yours and try over net to find which soil suits that....
its good that someone loves green.. and keep it up!

I use foliar feeding for bonsai trees, and if you want there is special food for the soil too. Yes, they are supposed to grow, just.... slowly and controlled.

Bonsai are wonderful. Groomed and pruned to encourage small miniature growing habit. In order to maintain the mini size you have to prune regularly. These sites say it better than I. Good luck, have fun.
