Some of thes "cult" movies are quite popular, so I am guessing it can't mean non-mainstream? Also, some movies have "cult" fanbases.

It's a movie with a more 'underground' following, rather than mainstream. Usually is not widely advertised, nor is it run in theaters. If it is, it's usually a brief run, and even then, not in big theaters. Cult movies tend to be low budget, and often (but now always) shoddily produced. Generally speaking, they include only B list actors. They are also often 'offbeat', or kinda weird. They are not expected to do very well, but shockingly they do, turning them into 'cult classics'. Often, the popularity of these movies spans several generations. Rocky Horror Picture show is a great example, also Dawn of the Dead, Headwig and the Angry Inch, Legend, Texas Chainsaw Massacre, Spinal Tap...the list goes on. Another common trait, is that these movies aren't loved because they are great films, but because they are wonderfully awful

A cult movie has a recognizable fan base. If you love a movie yet you are able to contact fans of the movie out of your area, then it's a cult movie. Star Wars and The Rocky Horror Picture Show have greatly outlived the normal shelf life of a movie and were popular. Some are not as well known such as Army of Darkness, but you can easily find fans of that movie.
