In the town that i live in(which is growing like crazy) they are planning on using that much space to build a mall, a hospital, theatre and auto mall? Is that as big as it sounds? Help me figure this out.

Well it's not as big as Jupiter, but let's put it into perspective.

Assuming the 3355 acres is distributed evenly in a square (which I suppose it probably isn't, but say it was!) you would have an area of about 5.25 square miles.

640 acres is an area 1 mile (1.6 Km) by 1 mile. I think the average walking time for a mile is about 15 minutes, so to walk around a square block measuring 640 acres would take about an hour.

To walk around a square area measuring 5.25 square miles would take just over 2 hours.

I'd say that's pretty big.

Not that big. There's one farm operation in Crawford County Iowa that was 4,000 acres a few years ago. They've probably bought more land by now. However, I'd guess that 3,355 acres is a huge chunk of the town where you live. And since 3,355 acres is over 5 square miles, I'd say it's going to be a very big mall and such. A lot of it will be parking lot, though, which is an environmental catastrophe in itself. So, yes, it's big. And it's bad for the environment.

3,200 acres = 5 mi^2, which could be a strip 1 mi wide by 5 mi long. A square containing 3,355 acres would have a side length of 2.2896 miles, or about 27.5 city blocks.

A large, let's say wooded backyard for a suburban home may be an acre. Spread that out 3,300 times and you have an idea how much space that would cover.

well there are 640 acres to a square mile so that works out to 5.24 square miles....there are 36 square miles in a township ( a measurement of public lands in the west)....so it is a smaller town in my estimation...in terms of square feet your town works out to 146,082,816....

It's big if you have to mow it, it's small if it's a state.
