The blood supply to the hand is more efficient than the blood supplied
to the lower extremities. It is obvious why and this may explain
why fingernails grow faster than toenails.

I've always heard its because fingers are used more/ recieve more stimulation, hence more bloodflow and a higher rate of nail growth.

maybe it's coz we usually wear shoes and it gets less light it and it also kinda prevents the growth of our toenails??? and we don't exactly have anything stopping our fingernails from growing....

i think that the answer is a combo of some of the above answers... fingers get better blood-flow, and sunlight, and water, and usually more lotion...
