I doubt it, and I don't think Imus was fired because free speech was denied him, I think he was fired because we all have free speech. You can't use the First Amendment to give him the right to say what he pleases and then deny the rest of us our First Amendment right to protest his words. Ultimately, he was fired because over 100 advertisers backed out of supporting the show. If I was an African-American woman advertising with CBS and heard him make those comments, why should I be pressured to ignore it and continue doing business with him? Free speech doesn't mean you are completely free from consequences, it simply means the government can't throw you in jail for speaking your mind.

Naturally, something like this should not be confused with employees being fired because they talk publically about their company's racist or sexist hiring policies or damage the company's product may be doing to the public at large. Sadly, this type of free speech denial is a problem we have not confronted well in our great nation.

I only wish we had demanded by now that our President and his Veep be fired after some of the inane and irresponsible lies they've told.

whether the country is free or not doesn't determine whether Imus is an asshole or not. Imus does that. and yeah he really is rather a prick. not the clever kind either.. just a garden variety jerk.

BTW Bush & Cheney don't deserve impeachment for inanity. they deserve impeachiment for violating the constitution - in at least two different ways (spying on citizens w/o warrants - *way* more than Nixon did- and war of aggression on false pretenses)

No i don`t think so.I personally never liked watching him,but i do think that his comments were completely drawn out of proportions.Nobody would have said anything ,if a black person would have made these remarks. They call each other the "N" word and that is OK also, but if a white person does so ,you better watch out. I am not a rasist and was not raised that way either.People in the US just can`t seem to let go.I guess it is part of the american culture.

he's not an asshole. We have all said things that perhaps we shouldnt have.

Hell Michael Richards wanted to lynch a black man, yet we still joke about it, but we've moved on.

The media is only throwing a fuss because he said it on the air. Had he said it at an event, this wouldnt be happening.

You can thank Timberlake and Miss Jacksons "Wardrobe Malfunction" for all the Meida being so easy to jump on heated issues.

He is an opinionated slob who should have learned to keep his mouth shut a long time ago, but he stated one day that he is a recovering alcoholic and drug user - like that is an excuse. Was he using the day that he made his comments? Probably not, but he used the words that he hears every day from others who say its okay for me to say them because I am using them with my friends, but it is not okay for someone else to use them because they heard me use them. That is bad on all parts. If you don't want someone to use the words that you use, then stop using them, even in private.

No, this is a free country. Everyone can voice his opinion to his heart's content. As much as we are not comfortable about what he said, he was just exercising his right to freedom of speech.

Of course not! I would think that he should have known better knowing he would be reprimanded especially when it's a live show.
