From a Buddhist perspective the purpose of Mindfulness Meditation is to look as deeply as possible, right down to the horrid and disgusting aspects of the body and psyche. In this way we see the repugnant nature of the body's various functions for exactly what they are, as well as looking deep into the psyche, breaking down each fear and desire into their component parts.
The reason for doing this are to examine the ways "self" arises in the consciousness, looking for the basic reasons for our selfishness and seeing this selfishness in its ugly and true reality. For then we can see why it is so silly to be attached to these selfish ideas, for example why it is such a silly notion that I become attached to this disgusting vehicle I call a body with its intricate and ugly mechanisms for waste disposal and so on. Where I should see it as just a vehicle in itself rather than be attached to its "beauty" and not be concerned about it ageing or dying.
Peace from a Buddhist....

It's really hard to say how deep one can look into one's self, It seems like a lot of people think they know everything about themself, but any person can have a 5 minute talk with them and tell them things they didn't know about themselves. Of course this isn't true with Most people. I'd say that I can see fairly deeply, but that's only because only people who know me VERY well have told me stuff about myself I havn't realized before.

Oh my . . . I can, and do, look very deeply into my own nature. Positive / " negative " . . . " Weaker " / stronger aspects of my nature...I do look deeply at that place.
A person may be able to ' hide ' from others...may be able to ' hide ' from their own selfs at times . . . But...a person can not ' hide ' from the One.
My motivation to keep myself aware and spiritually enlightened is not to please the One...It's done simply because it brings warmth, peace, balance to me...I feel more natural and in balance when I look at ' real ' aspects within. This is done by " looking deeply into my own nature ".
No " fear " going there...positive or " negative ". . . it simply IS.

Depends on how long you're locked up in an 8' by 10'cell. The longer, the deeper...If that's what you want to do.

Of course, with introspection being only one method. Any form of living in which one's mind is open and aware of their experience may give one insights into their nature. If one lives life without this sensitivity, they will be closed and ignorant.

I have a nature, but it's not human nature as it's commonly understood. I am the rain and before. I am the clouds and before. I am the Earth and before. I am the cosmos and before. I am the cosmicdrifter. ~ : )

As deep as it goes. Full fathom five.
& I write songs about it & sing them for strangers. No secrets. Nothing to hide.

you cant, you have to find someone else who can because humans will never agree that they have mistakes and will only if another person tells them
